Acne scar red and irritated?

by jossikaiser, Jul 22, 2008 08:47PM
I have a huge acne scar on my laugh line on my left cheek, The skin has been peeling off, but it still gets irritated easily and makes the scar look red. Will this prevent the scar from healing? Is this part of the healing process? It burns when I put any products on it and when I touch the area. It has been over a week since I first had the mark, but usually my scars don't get irritated so easily after a week. They are usually gone by then. Should I be worried that this might never fade? I also peeled the dried layer off when the pimple dried up. Was it just a really deep pimple and it needs more time to heal than the others? I am so hopelessly desperate. Makeup doesn't cover it and I look like a clown.

Hi,
Acne develops as a result of blockages in follicles. Hyperkeratinization and formation of a plug of keratin and sebum (a microcomedo) is the earliest change.
The microcomedo may enlarge to form an open comedo (blackhead) or closed comedo (whitehead). Whiteheads are the direct result of skin pores becoming clogged with sebum, a naturally occurring oil, and dead skin cells.

In these conditions the naturally occurring largely commensual bacteria Propionibacterium acnes can cause inflammation, leading to inflammatory lesions around the microcomedo or comedo, which results in redness and may result in scarring or hyperpigmentation.

It will take at least a week for the pimple to clear and if there has been a scar left behind, another two weeks for it to fade.
The fact that you have manipulated the area by peeling the skin off will delay the process.

You can apply gel or cream containing benzoyl peroxide , twice daily, into the pores over the affected region.
Antibiotics such as erythromycin, clindamycin can be applied on the site to hasten the healing.

It's already been a week and a half I think and the scar has not shown any improvement!
