by HarryA44, Jul 22, 2008 09:03PM
I had UTI and treated with Ciprofloxin ,after my family doctor changed the medicine to Macrobid 100 ( 2 times/day) for ten days.2 Urine tests are done and still the symptons fo Nitrofuratoin are available ,Dr says we have to continue .Internal physical rectal examination said right enlarge ment of prostrate. I am 44.PSA test shows high 62 .Doctor is still taking this as Prostitis.I have been asked to get another PSA after 10 days of Microbid course.
There is no blood and inflammation in urine, still frequest urination ,morning with yellowish urine.
I am worried high score of 63 PSA indicates  ?

Please advise.

Hi,

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood. Common benign prostate conditions such as prostatitis  and benign prostatic hyperplasia can increase PSA levels.PSA levels alone do not give doctors enough information to distinguish between benign prostate conditions and cancer.  It would be best to get the PSA after your treatment as well as the digital rectal exam to watch for any changes. Take care and keep us posted.

Hi,

During a digital rectal exam (DRE), a doctor inserts a gloved finger into the rectum and feels the prostate gland through the rectal wall to check for bumps or abnormal areas. PSA test and DRE are used as prostate cancer screening tests and can help in detecting prostate cancer in men who have no symptoms of the disease.
Take care and regards.

Hi,

The main treatment for  prostatitis is antibiotics. Special exercises and relaxation techniques can improve symptoms of prostatitis in some men such as exercise, biofeedback, sitz bath and prostate massage. Drinking plenty of water and limiting or avoid alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods may also help. You can read more about this through this link: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/prostatitis/DS00341/DSECTION=treatments%2Dand%2Ddrugs

Take care and please do update us.

Hi,

PSA reduced to 6 and Dr continued another 10 days Macrobid and  does not suspect anything els the prostrate infection.
Do you think at this stage I should have the inner rectal ultrasound to have more clarity on doubts ,after completion of this 10 days course.Dr suggested to have PSA after this 10 day course.
Please advise.

Regards

Hi,

It is good that your PSA is now reduced to 6. Continue your antibiotic as advised by your doctor and have your PSA measured again after 10 days. If the result is still the same, then, discuss a rectal ultrasound with your doctor to check on your prostate and to eliminate all doubts and anxiety. Take care and keep us posted with your next PSA result.

Thanks Dr Rowena,

I continued Microbid for another 10 days, had my PSA and urine test done on 14 August .Test reults for urine are OK and PSA level came down to 1.93 .As per my doctor's conclusion ,this is good and I do not have to worry any thing .He recommended to see him if any pain,UTI,blood in urine in future.

Please advise if  I should still go for rectal ultrasound.how much safe PSA recommended in my case.
Regards
