Medicines to avoid for HepB.

by stevenNYer, Jul 23, 2008 12:14AM
I was reading a couple of posts asking if a certain medicine has bad effects on those with HepB.  I thought it would be helpful to share and add to what we know on this subject.

I was told that any immunosuppressant drug is not good for those with HepB.  This makes sense.  It's like the opposite of immunomodulator drugs, like interferons, designed to stimulate your immune system to help fight the virus.  I guess if you have HepB and need immunosuppressant drugs, it may be wise to ask your doctor about antiviral treatment (if needed).

Steroid containing medicine (such as a spray for treating asthma) can activate the viral replication. A person with positive viral DNA in the blood, should avoid steroids.  (I came across this in my online reads.)

Acetaminophen, the very common pain reliever / fever reducer is not liver friendly.  My doctor told me it's okay to take a couple of regular strength pills to ease a headache but try to avoid the extra strength pills on a regular basis.

Just read this and wondered if you are talking about the ventalin inhaler (which i currently use!).... Does this mean i cannot take this inhaler anymore as it replicates liver enzymes?

Found this in other HBV Dr Forum :

However, if the person has circulating HBV DNA and on antiviral therapy, he/she should consult a doctor because a treatment for asthma (if severe), may contain a steroid in the medication or nasal spray. A steroid-containing medicine can activate the viral replication. A person with positive viral DNA in the blood, should avoid steroids.
