Chronic Sinus Infection or Other Underlying Problems

by udom, Jul 23, 2008 02:26AM
My son is now 12 months old and he has been suffering from a chronic stuffy nose and at times congestion for over 6 months. It has been interfering with his sleep as he is not able to breath through his nose at all and he does not know how to breath through his mouth. It's hard for me to see him struggle at night for a little breath and see that he wakes up every few minutes crying. We hardly get 3 hours of sleep a day. It's been like this for many months going to maybe 7 months now. At first his doctor told me it was a nasty cold turning into a flu. After 5 months I asked him if there was something else and he prescribed antibiotics for a sinus infection. After 10 days on the antibiotic he seemed to get better but later on it got worse. We have changed his milk numerous times with no effect. We have taken him to an allergist specialist and they've done skin test and they were negative. No allergies to anything. We found mold in our home and on the mattress where my son slept. We moved out of the house. We have have him scheduled to meet an Ears Nose Throat specialist to examine the size of his tonsils for the 2nd time. The first time the ENT specialist told us that there are no structural problems with him. My concern is that my son was given antibiotic to treat his chronic sinus infection (that's what we think it is) and he was on this for 23 days. Doctor wanted me to keep him on antibiotic for 60 days and Nasonex and Afrin and Zyrtec. I think this is too much for a little boy like my son. I stopped the antiobitic on 23 days. Is it safe to keep it to 60 days? What if he has a fungal sinus infection?  What should our course of action be? Please help. We are desperate at this point to help our son.

My son was also on antibiotics and Nasonex for a sinus infection. the dr thought he might also have allergies so I was also told to give him nasalcrom twice a day.. you can buy it over the counter..  he squirms around so much I have sprayed him in the eye a couple of times so I really haven't been consistent with the nasal sprays.  He just stopped taking his antibiotic 2 days ago, so we'll see how it goes from here.  This was his second round of antibiotics.. the first was for 10 days, this time it was for 14.

Best of luck to you.
