Narcolepsy & Sleep Apnea

by jamesanderson59, Jul 23, 2008 07:06AM
I'm going through a pretty tough time right now.  I have experienced occasional bouts of narcolepsy over the past few years, and within the last year they are getting worse. I have gone as far as to fall asleep in public restrooms and have woken up halucinating that I was buried alive. This situation makes it almost impossible for me to keep or find a job. My family practice Doctor said that treatment for the sleep apnea may cure the narcolepsy or lessen it's severity. I'm hoping so because I really need to find at leat a part time job soon.

In August of last year I was diagnosed or suspected to have several ailments which have all but taken me completely out of commission. Disorders include: Sleep Apnea, Congestive Heart Failure, Arthritis,Pulmonary Adema and Hypoxemia. My Doctor has me on Furosemide,Lisinopril and I'm on Home & Ambulitory Oxygen.

I was a smoker for several years, but I quit over 3 years ago. I've breathed a lot of second hand smoke over the years as I was a Full Time DJ working nightclubs of all sizes. Most of them cloudy with smoke. Some more than others.

Taking all this into consideration, what can I expect to have done when I finally get to see my pulminologist & cardiologist. Right now I'm a MCPN/CICP patient. I have a sleep study coming up this week. I'm hoping the narcolepsy can be controlled if not cured. What should I expect? Are there any questions I should be prepared to ask? And since Hypxemeia is such a broad term, what should I suggest to help my new doctors pinpoint the actual cause?
