It this normal

by nuttyasha, Jul 23, 2008 09:09AM
Found out I was pregnant three days ago. This is my first pregnancy. Last period 2 June - seven weeks ago - suffered irregular periods sometimes 30 days sometimes 45 days for the past two years. Went for  check up today and was given vaginal ultrasound. They found the enlarged uterus and sac but could not see anything inside. Alarming they found a cysts type lump outside on left side. Have been experiencing pain on my left side - just like period pains just before scan and are ongoing.  Not too painful but have not been there in the last 6 weeks.  Alarmingly no blood test or HCG levels were taken or mentioned. I was just told to come back next week as the pregnancy could be ectopic. Is this normal with irregular periods and if suspected ectopic is it safe to wait one week?

i thought some cysts can cause a false postive. i dont kno if thats true or anything

That can be pretty typical.  If they did the u/s they have an idea of how large the possible ectopic could be and how large it will grow in one week.  HCG levels are not always drawn and usually the u/s is better than any blood work they could do.  If you have any type of severe pain go to the er immediately.  I woudl look up ectopic symptoms and know what they are just in case.  Cysts are also common in pregnancy and on here we have all read about the ultrasound problems that ended in healthy pregnancies.  I would give it a week and see what happens.  By the way...the doctors at this stage never seem optimistic so you cant always go by their emotion, just the words.  Anything wtih maybe, could happen...they are giving you worst case senario.  The feelings you have now stick around for a while so be preparied for worry even when you "know" things are fine.  Good Luck!!

Thanks for advise.
Unfortunately, It was an ectopic pregnancy and I was rushed in for an emergency surgery as my fallopian tube ruptured on Friday. They were not able to save my tube and I have to go back next week to check out for a further check up and stitches removal.

I do regret not going for a second opinion and not insisting on the blood test.
I would just like to say that for anyone else reading this post - please dont be afraid to go to emergency room if you are suffering from any cramping even very early on. I do suffer from extremely painful period cramping and the ectopic symptoms are very similar.

Its best to get it checked out by your doctor or gynecologists.

I wish you good health, luck and happiness
