Pain following Cervical Fusion

by mtoszr, Jul 23, 2008 10:16AM
Hi,
I am a 45 year old RN and herniated a disc in 2005.  I was able to manage the pain with conservative tx for one year and then reinsured which lead to fusion at C5-C6.  Following the surgery in 2006 I was left with such severe pain from my neck down my arm into my hand with burning sensation in the right side midscapula area.  All of the symptoms are on the right side.  My wrist area swells with activity and I drop things due to the weakness that happens after any kind of sitting/leaning/typing activity.  I have had every tx and every test since with no relief.  The doctors said they don't know why this is happening.  I have to rely heavily on pain medication.  I just got a pproved for yet another opinion and just had a new MRI.  The findings are as follows:

1.  POSTSURGICAL CHANGES AT C5/C6 WITH EVIDENCE FOR RECURRENT LATERALIZING DISC HERNIATION.

2.  MILD INTERVAL ENLARGEMENT OF SMALL CENTRAL PROTUSION AT C2-C3 CONTACTING THE VENTRAL CORD.

3.  UNCOVERTEBRAL JOINT HYPERTROPHY REULTSW IN SIGNIFICANT FORAMINAL STENOSIS ON THE LEFT AT C3/4, MODERATE BILATERAL FORAMINAL NARROWING AT C6-C7 AND MILD ON THE RIGHT AT C4/C5.

What this all mean?  Can anyone help with some answers?  I can't get into see a specialist until January.  Also, does anyone know of better pain management than Vicodin?

Any help understanding what is going on with me would be deeply appreciated.
