ear, jaw, throat pain after crowns fillings

by rc1960, Jul 23, 2008 12:05PM
I am taking way too much ibuprofen.  Had 2 crowns on bottom back 2 teeth in Feb.  Continue to have pain in jaw/ear.  Teeth don't hurt - I don't think they are terribly sensitive to cold.

I have appt. Monday with dentist.  What can he do - what can I tell him?  Will xrays see if there is infection?  What if I need root canal - what will happen to my crowns?

Contact the dentist about something stronger for pain.  Be honest about the amount of ibuprofen you have been taking. You may have an infection. The infection could also be in your jaw and not the tooth.  I have one in my jaw right now it's terribly painful and I was gievn a combination of 2 different antibiotics to treat it.  If you need a root canal they will go through the crowns I had it done yesterday.  The x-rays don't tell them if there is infection they go on symptoms and other diagnostic tests tapping the tooth, ice, and a few others.  As for what you tell him you tell him what you have been experiencing.

thanks for responding - I was also considering going to a md to check for ear infection or something, but I feel that it is dental related and I have no fever or anything.  Does your ear ache with your jaw infection?  Thanks for helping.

sorry to be a pest - I just put a piece of ice on my back crown and it made them ache - I really do think it is tooth related

If you put ice on it and it reacted it is more than likely the tooth.  Sometimes my ear does hurt when I have a tooth or jaw infection.  All these things are all pretty closely related so often if you have pain in one you will get pain in another.  I hope you get some answers and feel better soon.  I would get to the dentist soon before it gets worse.
