High calories for a 9 moth old

by Stavie13, Jul 23, 2008 03:22PM
At my 9 month old's doctor appointment yesterday, he weighed in at just over 15 lbs, less than a 2 pound increase from his 6 month check up. He has been doing pretty well with solids, but very recently he has been resisting his bottles. Of course, this has become very stressful for my husband and I as we are in the process of having this thyroid and kidneys tested (docs orders), but to make matters worse, we feel like we are not getting enough food in him. We give his bottle first, then solids. Any ideas? Also, we are staring a high calorie diet for him, the doctor has suggested peanut butter, avocados, dairy based products (Greek-style yogurt, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, ice cream), whole grain pastas... but he just gets full so fast and fusses if we try to feed him. Any thoughts?

From your measurements, his height is just below the 50th percentile and his weight is very below 5th percentile for his age. Try to give him formula in a child's cup instead of a bottle and see if he will drink it. If he accepts the cup, suggest giving him formula instead of water or juice, and give it to him between meals with a snack so he consumes more. Feed him 3 meals a day and healthy snacks (with cup of formula) between meals to make-up for the loss of the bottle feedings.
