Negative TSH Positive Hypothyroid?

by Compulibrarian, Jul 23, 2008 05:36PM
Hi
I've been on Synthroid for 28 years  THey've recently decided my TSH was too high.   My hair is falling out I'm exhausted have lots of muscle aches I'm depressed and I've gained 15 lbs without changing any eating habits.
I think they need to raise my dosage again but the dr doesn't agree.  Is it possible that my TSH is normal but I'm not?
Thanks

A high TSH points to hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).  Along with your symptoms (classic hypo!), I'd say you are likely in need of a medication adjustment to a higher dosage of Synthroid.

The only other thought that comes to mind is have you changed the way you take your Synthroid lately?  For instance, if you always took it on an empty stomach with water, and now are taking it at breakfast with milk (or too close to vitamins or calcium supplements), that would affect the way your body absorbs the medicine and could have the same effect.

Did your doctor indicate a dosage change?

No I get up and wait an hour before eating and taking my other medications.  The dr  keeps lowering my dosage but my symptoms get worse every time they do but the drs. dont listen  I had a  wonderful dr who was hypothyroid himself so he understood but unfortunately he passed away now I cant find anyone who'll help me.
