after effects of retinal re-attachment

by cristina1676, Jul 23, 2008 06:43PM
i had my retina repaired with the scleral buckle in 2006. there were no changes until recently when the floaters changed shape. i went to the dr 2x in june and he said all is fine with the retina. is there a reason that the floaters would change shape? they "swim" across my field of vision now and make it seem almost hazy rather than just hang out on the top of my eye. i jsut wanted to know why this has happened.

I guess the answer is that it just happens.  The vitreous is in a state of degeneration and collapse due the retinal surgery with vitrectomy.  Any movement of your eye or your body will cause the vitreous to move and thus the changes in the floaters.  What is important is to see your retinal specialist regularly to make sure everything is still in good, safe condition with regards to your retina and eye.

I have an appointment august 22 for a re-check up. im optomistic. it is just disheartening to have these in your central vision. is there ANY chance that they will change again?

I have had five surgeries in one eye. I am confused about what you mean by having floaters in your central vision. Do they interfere with vision/reading? I have scar tissue on my left eye that prevents me from reading with that eye; it also creates a blind spot.

In my rght eye, which has never detached, I have all kinds of floaters, but I see fine.

Best of luck with all.

Floaters that change shape, seem to flip over, are hazy and swim all over the place actually is a good thing. It means the vitreous has detached, and if your retina dr says there are no new tears, then chances of a new tear or retina detachment become much less. Since I have retina degeneration (heredity), I remind myself of this everytime these floaters start causing me problems, usually in low light conditons. Another thing I've noticed since the vitreous completely detached, is that the floaters are more easily moved out of the way, at least temporarily, by a rapid eye movement.

This could also be vitreal changes that produce hair/stick like floaters that really distort vision. My turn in duck and other formations. I have these in both my good and bad eye, My doctor says that they are part of the natural PVD process. Also, I have a donut shaped "weiss-ring in my good eye; it's a cluster of the string-like gloaters. This is a natural change, and maybe this is what you see in your central vision.
Continue to report all changes to your doctor; he is the specialist who cam tell you what everything means for your eye.

Dorry for your distress. Hope you are better.

I have new floaters when I have new lattice, which needs to be lasered. However, this is in my good eye, which has received only laser treatment, no surgery.

I think you should see your retinologist immediately. If anything is happening with the retina, he needs to fix it right away. Whenever you have a chang in floaters, flashing lights, or an (that appears like "a curtain, a veil, or a piece of darkened glass), see your doctor immediately. These thing could mean new retina problems. Go tomorrow.

I spelled your name incorrectly on the last post--bad retinas.

I have new floaters when I have new lattice, which needs to be lasered. However, this is in my good eye, which has received only laser treatment, no surgery.

I think you should see your retinologist immediately. If anything is happening with either retina, he needs to fix it right away. Whenever you have a change in floaters, flashing lights, or an obstruction in your vision (that appears like "a curtain, a veil, or a piece of darkened glass), see your doctor immediately. Cup your hand over either eye and look in all 4 directions, to check for an obstruction.

These things could mean new retina problems. Go tomorrow.

it is just stressful when you want to watch tv or read tnd the floaters are all over the place...they do move when i move my eye and sometimes i can get "clear" vision and then i move my eye and they are back. but i have learned that you have to live with things as long as nothing is really wrong!

If they have not changed since you saw him, there is no reason not to believe him. You could get a second opinion.

I am sorry about your worry.

When I take sleep medication, like ambien, I see tons of people all around me--it is so weird, but I just go to sleep.
