Diverticulitis

by PibbleNibble, Jul 23, 2008 08:42PM
I was finally told this weekend that I have Diverticulitis/colitis.  For months, I have been searching for answers to what is wrong.  The pain was finally so severe that I went to the ER thinking I had  appendicitis. After a Ct scan with contrast, I was finally diagnosised.  I have not had a colonoscopy.  I am guessing this would be my next step?  I have had back pain that feels like a kidney infection for a year.  I had been tested for it and even kidney stones and was neg.  I am so relieved that this may be the answer that I have been searching for, for 2 yrs.  I am also frustrated that it wasn't found sooner.  I am 42, good weight and eat healthy so I guess that I dont fit the profile.  I dont know.  I eat healthy and watch everything that I eat because of the issues I have.  I already eat a high fiber diet.  I dont know what more I could do to make this better.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Right now I am on 2 anitbiotics, Cipro and Flagyl.

You should finish the antibiotic course and then you'll see, was it only infection, or there is also some inflammation there. This can be found only by colonoscopy.

In diverticulitis, it is good to avoid foods which can stuck in diverticula: corn, strawberries, apple seeds etc. In general, fibers are good, meaning, you have to maintain soft stools.

In severe diverticula/itis diet won't help, but only a surgery, where affected part of the colon is removed.

The dr said the worst part was where the small and large intestines meet.   I think.  Which must explain why my lower right side was in so much pain. I haven't had a colonoscopy yet tho.  I was diagnossed by ct scan.  I had just given him the symptoms of the awful 2 days prior and not symptoms over the last 2yrs.  I have a gastro dr but he just seemed to blow me off.  I hated going and only went when I couldn't tolorate certain symptoms any longer.  I told him at my last appt with him in Jan that my back was hurting like I had a Kidney infection but I didn't think I did.  All he said was I should get that checked by another dr, diagnossed me with a nervous stomach and sent me on my way.  I think because I had had my gallbladder our a yr ago they just want to assume that was the cause.  Now that I have something solid as to a possibility as to what may be wrong maybe now they will take me serious.  I think I will just get a different dr to take over.

Where the small and large intestine meet...that place is known to be often affected by Crohn's disease. You need colonoscopy to confirm this.
