Some cancers, specifically Testicular or Ovarian Germ cell tumors (seminoma or dysgerminoma, respectively) secretes a substance called B-HCG. This is the same substance that is being detected by present day pregnancy test kits. During pregnancy, the woman also develops high levels of this substance.
However, for the germ cell tumors, a urine pregnancy test positive is not a reliable marker, and biopsy of obvious tumors or lesions is still the gold standard. measurement of actual B-HCG levels directly from the blood is also recommended.
