nipple discharge

by Igorot, Jul 23, 2008 11:00PM
I have been having a reaccuring nipple discharge for the last 3 months. At first I it was staph infection, and ultrasound was done and everything is normal. No discharge for two months unless I squeeze the nipple. 3 weeks ago a blood discharge without squeezing, back to the doctor and staph infection again taken 2 kinds of antibiotic. I had urltrasound and mammogram done again. Twice this year. This las mammogram and ultrasound found some lump and schedule for biopsy this Friday. I need help on how the staph infection got into my breast. I could blame my husband but he never had any staph infection. So has anyone having the same problem. I have a lot of fibrosistic in my breast. This is my third biopsy and so far the first two is always normal. I think it will be normal again this time. I am worried about the staph infection since I hate taking antibiotic. Please help!!!!!!

Hi there.

Staphylococcus is a bacteria that normally resides on the surface of our skin, without causing any specific harm.  However, if there are some form of break or tauma in the skin area (or cracks in the nipples from whatever cause), this can result in that bacteria translocating inside the breast and causing an inflammatory process, hence, an infection.

In your situation, it is important to keep your nipples, clean, and moisturized to avoid skin cracking.  Also, ask your doctor about the possibility of other diagnoses aside from staph infection such as breast duct papilloma, which can present with bloody nipple discharge.

Regards.
