How can I stop my daughter picking her scabs

by Eppy007, Jul 24, 2008 05:54AM
My 10 year old has developed a horrible habit and is picking her arms to bits and keeps on picking them.  She has always had sentive skin and we have kept her skin heathly up until 2 months ago. We dress her scabs morning and night and very few people know how hard this battle is becoming.  I just do not understand why she can't stop.  I got mad and yelled at her tonight because she just picked two more that were just about healed, I know making her feel bad about picking the scabs is not helping her, I am just so sick of rubbing creme on her day and night and not getting anywhere........... It is got that bad that I am too scared to take her to her swimming leasons anymore.  Has any one got any advice? as I don't want to mentally scar my beauitful daughter.  I had no idea that people suffered from this behavior

Scab picking is a common component of OCD - obsessive compulsive disorder,  which is an anxiety disorder.

I would check into getting her therapy with a really good therapist who deals with OCD before this becomes more ingrained in her brain pattern.

Thanks for your comments, I believe that a therapy is the right way to go.

Maybe she has a skin condition , ask the Doc to examine her skin ,its there not in her head, its itching she probably has an allergy ,mine itch also, I have an allergy I dont pick them but I can jolly well see that you might do that. Check her skin..

I have spent a few thousand dollars taking her the Doc /
specilaist / natural cremes / cotton clothes etc, I use all sentive laundry detergent and do a extra rinse.  I think we have always managed her sentive skin and controlled it when it got bad, but this time this is different, she is picking them.  I have an appointment next week for her and I to go meet a therapist.  On the good side we have read these responses together and it has brought out a few issues she has been dealing with moving city new school etc.  So thanks to for your response it has helped us move forward:)
