Excessive bleeding

I am a 40 years old lady. I have a six years old daughter. I am experiencing heavy bleeding this time. My cycle has been prolonged this time. Its the sixth day and I am still bleeding heavily. I also noticed that before my cycle I had spotting for 2-3 times. This has never happened before, therefore would like to know if it is a cause for concern. Should I consult the gynaec durring the menes or wait till it is completely over? Please advise ASAP.
