The future? Any advice?

by js25, Jul 24, 2008 08:01AM
Hi, I'm really really hoping that someone out there can just give me their advice or ideas. My elderly Grandfather (86) had a massive stroke on Monday and then on the Tuesday suffered a series of smaller strokes. He had alzheimers and now is in the nursing home, bed bound, unable to swallow and mostly unresponsive. He makes no noise and sleeps for most of the time. When his eyes are open he seems to see movement but little else. He was gripping our hands before but this has lessened over time. The doctors have said that they are just trying to keep him comfortable now and we know that he will not recover. My question is (and I hate to write it down because it makes me so sad) but how long is he likely to suffer with this? My family have been so wonderful and have been at his bedside constantly since it happened 4 days ago. Today he has had a drip fitted to hydrate him but this is just inserted into his skin (not feeding him intravenously). His vitals are still strong. Please give me any advice you have. Thanks xxx

So sorry to hear about your grandfather.  Unfortunately, there is no way to know how long he will remain like that.  Some people last this way for a long time.  Your family may have to make "the decision" if there is no improvement but I think sometimes it's done too soon.  Strong vitals is a good thing, though.  Just remember, there is a possibility that he will come out of it.  Keep hope alive and I sure hope he pulls through.

Thanks for the update on your grandfather and I'm truly sorry about your loss.  I really believe he was joyful to have seen everyone before he passed.  May God bless you and your family.  Thanks for sharing.
