My son has had diarrhea for ten days now. I called the E.R. last week and said to just keep giving him fluids. I also but him on the brat diet. Thats not working. I have no medical insurance for my son and i was wondering if I should take him in to the hospital or is there something else I can try.. He has also lost about 5 lbs give or take.....

dehydrtion can be very serious in small children.  If you did have insurance would he be at the hospital right now??

please try looking to your state government for assistance with insurance for the future.  Either medical insurance assistance or a clinic you can go and negotiate prices.  It is very scary to not have insurance for a child and have to make these kinds of decisions.  I am sure you are not happy about the position you are in and would feel much better if you could just take him to the hospital with no worries about money.  Please look into that for your son.

Your one year old son has lost 5 POUNDS?  So you have a minor emergency clinic,  AMPM clinic or ProMed center or anything like that?  You don't have to have insurance for health care - and your baby really needs it.

He needs to be seen, like YESTERDAY! Don't delay taking him in any longer.

i cannot stress enough how important health insurance is. especially for a small child. i am sure there are some state/government funded agencies who can assist you in getting insurance for your child at a reduced cost based upon your income. for example, herein NJ, there is something called NJ Kid Care. Please look into it! its one thing to put yourself at risk, but to not have coverage for your child is not wise. i suggest you take him immediately to the emergency room and deal with the bill when it comes. you can make payments on hospital bills and they do not accrue interest.

He needs to be seen NOW!   For a time we didn't have health insurance either but I can honestly say it didn't keep us from getting our children care.   It was difficult but they do make payment arrangements with you.

have 2 kids is right the hospital will make payment arrangements.  Look into Child Health Plus, they have affordable insurance plans for your child.  This is a must.

Hospital!  He needs to be seen!  Diarhea is a BIG deal if left for too long!  Is there something that he may be eating that he is allergic to?    I would take him to the emergency room.  You don't need money up front.  And you can arrange payments later.
There is medicaid in most states, if you qualify income-wise.  If not, most states have other programs for reduced prices for insurance.  My daughter has Fl. Kidcare.  I have low copays and the premium is based upon your income.  But you don't have to be low income to qualify.  I too had an issue when my DD was between health insurance.  And we went to the hospital for her care.  It was expensive, but we worked out a payment plan and the payments are low.

5 lbs!?!? for a one year old that can be 20-25% of his weight!
he could be facing very major complications in addition to weight loss. he needs to be admitted, not just seen by a doctor. hospitals also do charity care for people who truly can't afford medical care. please don't let him suffer anymore.

Take him off of the Dairy. My 21 mo old had diarrhea for 10 days, well, watery stools. They say diarrhea is like 4-6 times a day. Some days she would only have it 1-2 times. BUT, we had the stomach flu and it just took her bowels much longer to recover. The dr. said if it lasted any longer to go to the lab for them to get a stool sample. No milk and try to keep with bland foods...5lbs is a lot in a 1 year old. I know it's expensive but Pedialyte should be given also. They say the clear is best, I mix it with gatorade. My dr. recommended with OJ. Also, kids Florastor at the local Walgreens. 2x a day in a drink. good luck.
