Need some advice on surgery

by sinusy, Jul 24, 2008 11:47AM
Ever since being diagnosed with pnuemonia in January of '07, I have had problems with sinus pressure in and around my eyes and ears.  I recently went to an ENT who took a ct scan of my sinuses.  The Dr. told me that my sinuses are 'packed' with fluid, so he put me on 21 days of avelox and 7 days of prednisone 20mg a day.  After that course of medecine i went back to the ENT Dr, who took another ct scan of my sinuses.  No change, he said that they are still packed with fluid.  So he took a culture of my sinuses to see if it was a strange bacteria that was causing the infection.  The results of the culture were "No growth".  He said what i have is more of a drainage problem, and that surgery would be best thing to clear this up.  Just wondering if you had ever heard of this and if you think surgery is the only way to get my sinuses drained.  Thanks.

Often when you get sinus cavities full of infected mucus, antibiotics no longer work, because there's very little blood circulation to the sinuses to deliver antibiotics.  Until recently the only way to get the fluid out is to suck it out with an endoscope.

I was facing the same fate, after 5 years on chronic sinusitis, and I tried saline irrigation as a last resort.   That failed, so in a desperate measure I recreated the conditions I had during my swim team years to fill my sinuses with water.   Lo and behold, it worked miraculously, and massive amounts of infected snot drained from my upper sinuses and I was cured.  I've had about 10 acute sinus infections since, and none of them turned chronic because of my technique. Now that's I'm no longer around sick schoolkids, I breathe free every day.

If you want to try it, cursor the blue friggy and go the the Journal for instructions and the scientific reasons why it works.  It's mildly risky, because you have to bend over in a shower, but you will see quick results.  The only reason it might not work for you is if the openings to your sinuses are scarred shut, but your ENT would've told you that, I'm sure.

Surgery is often effective, but if they don't get all of the infection it might grow back, and if you go to some of the older posts here, you'll find some other complications.
