This patient support community is for discussions relating to breast cancer, biopsy, genetics, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, lumps, lumpectomy, lymph node dissection, lymphedema, mammograms, mastectomy, radiation therapy, reconstruction, and self exams.
If no chemotherapy is indicated, then radiotherapy should ideally start about 3-6 weeks after the lumpectomy, or if the surgical wound has completely healed. If chemotherapy is indicated for whatever reason (node positive or other unfavorable features) then radiotherapy is given after all the adjuvant chemotherapy cycles are already given (total of about 18-21 weeks post surgery).
Radiation aims to lessen the risk of developing a recurrence on the affected breast. If hormonal treatment is also like wise indicated (for ER/PR positive tumors), then hormonal therapy can be given along side or after radiation therapy.
Regards.
