1st period after delivery

My son is 17 months old, and I jsut finished nursing last month. I just got my first period after delivery on Wed, and it is so heavy and the cramps are so painful. My periods before the pregnancy were only 3 days long, light and pain free. Will my periods stay this heavy and painful or will theygo back to normal?
