Is surgery from csf pressure dangerous?

by latnboi666, Jul 25, 2008 04:53PM
My ex has been in the hospital now for 1 week with migraines.  After a series of tests, the Doctor's told her she has Cerebrospinal fluid.  They also said that she needs surgery to drain fluids from her brain.  Can anyone please tell me how dangerous this is?  Is this a common procedure?

I'm not exactly clear on what the issue is... but I might be able to offer something. I have high CSF pressure... Pseudotumor Cerebri. May 27th I had an Intracranial Pressure Monitor placed, one that they could draw fluid from when/if my pressure went too high... I'm not sure if this is what your ex is having done, but the concept should be similiar. Any surgery carries risks, infection, bleeding, and even death. My neurosurgeon had done this procedure hundreds of times, if you'd feel more comfortable, ask the NS how many times he/she has personally performed the procedure, typically they know the exact number.

With my procedure, a patch of hair was shaved, they made a half moon shaped incision in my scalp, drilled a burr hole (a very small hole) in my skull, fed a wire through my brain into the fluid-filled ventricle. On my profile I have a picture of my scar if you are interested. I was placed on antibiotics before surgery and stayed on for a couple of days afterwards, which I think is pretty typical, lowering the chance of infection.

Best Wishes.

One more thing I thought of to add... high CSF pressure it itself can be extremely dangerous, depending on the circumstances, so the surgery is well worth the very small chance that she could end up worse off.

Hi,

How are you?
Cerebrospinal fluid is normally present in the brain. Is it increased CSF pressure due to blockade of flow of CSF? Please elaborate.
