Frequent Urination

by jacqua7, Jul 26, 2008 08:17AM
My 8 year old son recently had a urinary tract infection. It seems that since then ( about 5 days) he is urinating almost every hour. He urinates small amounts. He does not have to get up during the night to go and has not had an accident in bed. He does seem to drink more often and often drinks diet colas. I have not noticed anything else abnormal.

Hi,

It takes a few days for normal bladder routine to be restored after a UTI.
However, diet colas are not ideal fluid intake for a child of 8 still recovering from a UTI.

Carbonated drinks have an adverse effect on healing and the additives in them can predispose to the formation of renal calculi, especially in a kidney that is recovering from an infective insult/

If the infection was persistent, your son would have had frequency of urination even at night.

Do ensure that he has adequate fluid intake 1500 - 2000 ml per day that includes milk, citrus juices, and water. You can always substitute carbonated drinks with lemonade.

Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress.
Regards
