Echo Questions and Strange symptoms

by KindaWorried2008, Jul 26, 2008 01:45PM
Im a 25 yr old female. I just got echo back that stated Right to Left shunt across PFO, Normal LV systolic function, impaired LV relaxation, minimal mitral and tricuspid regurgitation.

For past two months, been in hospital twice.  Had left sided extreme weakness, numbness, pins and needles. Extreme feeling of pressure/fullness behind left knee, down calf, underarm, and upper side of elbow, feels very swollen but not too noticable to other people. Doesnt hurt, just discomfort from the pressure. Some discomfort in front of left shoulder area over chest, but not bad. Having dizzy, lightheaded spells, almost fainting, confusion. Some numbness in cheek as well. When I stand or walk for more than 15 minutes, I start experiencing some of the symptoms again, been very fatigued, night sweats. Also my pulse has stayed around 100.

Had MRI of head and neck, nothing abnormal except lymph node mass enlargement and presence of adenoids (which are suppose to go away when your young)that ENT saw me for, doesnt think it is of immedaite concern.   Neurologist diagnosed me with hemaplegic/complicated migraines while in the hospital, before the echo was done.  Nuerologist ordered the echo of heart which didnt come back until I was out of the hospital. He put me on 50 mg topomax. However, I keep having the symptoms even when Im not experiencing my migraines or headaches. I have some days that it comes on very strong.  I cant drive or do much of anything on those days. I just recvd the echo report today via faxfrom my PCP and she set me up an appointment setup with a cardiologist. however I was never told anything about it. Is there anything I need to be expecting or asking about????  I dont even know any of my blood results or anything from the hospital stays, they didnt really discuss much with me. Is this related to the heart issue..I dont even know what the issue is yet!  Any advice or information would be appreciate

With a PFO and right to left shunt, your doctor is probably concerned about this being the cause of the migraines and your other symptoms.  The evidence for this isn't great and we don't really know what to in many of such cases.  With cases of true cryptogenic stokes, there is an indication to close the PFO via performing a simple procedure.  In a case such as yours where the MRI is normal and the symptoms aren't classic it is hard to justify closing the PFO.  You should hava a hypercoagulable work up and wear a Holter monitor for a couple of days as part of further workup.  This would also allow us to find out whether there is any cardiac arrhythmia that could explain some of your symptoms.  This is not a dangerous condition, 1 out of every 3 people has a PFO.
