seizures?

by mirandaly, Aug 13, 2008 01:52AM
Recently a friend of mine suggested that some problems I've been experiencing for most of my life could be signs of epilepsy.

The problems are: shaking/twitching; auditory, visual, and tactile hallucinations and illusions; and anxiety (especially in social settings but also otherwise). More recently I've also been experiencing very bad headaches that last for very short amounts of time, mostly on the left side of my head but occasionally over my right eye.

I have been seeing and hearing things for as long as I can remember and it never really bothered me as a kid, but they quit happening for several years and came back about three years ago. Gradually they have become a little more disturbing.

I have always had issues with becoming extremely nervous in social settings but recently it's making it difficult to work.

The shaking and twitching have been happening for the past 4 or 5 years but recently it's gotten worse and it makes me scared to drive.

My friend thinks these could be seizures, but I am not sure what I think because while they do affect my every day life they are not usually painful nor are they very obvious. Also I am perfectly aware of my surroundings etc. while it is happening, and I have never passed out from it, although I do occasionally have problems remembering what I'm doing.

Does this seem like something I should get checked out or could it be easily fixed by adjusting my diet etc. (because it could be improved, and I am working on that)?

Also if this is not seizures/epilepsy, what else might it be?

Hi,

This most certainly sounds like complex partial epileptic seizures, i've had them for a number of year and dismissed them too, but a few weeks ago i had a general seizure and collapsed at work - Im a nurse, so it couuld have been worse but it was a very scary experience! I think you should approach your GP and a simple EEG and MRI could diagnose this and make life much easier for you!! I had a history of absence seizures as achild, basically like spacing out, but the whole thing has taught me that theses things should always be checked out. Medication is really effective and epilepsy definately doesnt have the same stigma it did many years ago.

Good luck and Take care,

Grainne
