sore joints, sore groin sore throat

History: I had unprotected sex about 2 months ago, and about 10 days later I started feeling ill.

Symptoms: sores on penis, sore joints (one finger, one knee and one elbow) sore or swollen groin both sides and sore throat.

I live and work in Thailand for the past 3 years, I went to the Doctor the first time and he gave me  levoflocacin 500g a day for 5 days. This had no effect.

Second time the Doctor said it was herpes and gave me famciclovir 250g three times a day for 5 days.
Third time the Doctor said it was still herpes and gave me famciclovir 250g three times a day for 5 days again.

The sore on the penis has cleared up, but my joints and groin are still very painful and my tongue has yellow muck on it every morning even if i scrap it of before sleep. If i cough big bits of the yellow muck will come out.

The main problem  in Bangkok is to find a good Doctor, I feel so frustrated I want to fly home to Britain to see me doctor.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Yes, PID is in women.

I think Vance was just posting possibilities.

Maybe someone can answer the following question that just came to my mind when I read this thread.

Above it is mentioned that certain STDs could lead to pelvic inflammatory disease. But isn't this PID restricted to women? Just curious...

Your doctor disagreed??  That's lousy.  Its also medically inept.

Yes, a culture can be sent off, but if your doctor's office has a lab, or even a microscope, they can check the sample there.  I think you need to follow up and find out what kind of bacteria.

That's the thing about test results - they are pretty much non-debatable.  Your doc shouldn't be "disagreeing" with lab results.

My understanding is cultured means growing in a petri dish for 3 or so days.

When I had my results back in under an hour.

The result was bacteria, but the doctor disagreed with the test result and said it looked like herpes.

OK I'm confused now.

If they found out it was bacterial, then they had to have cultured it.  And there's not really anything confusing about something looking like herpes - lots of things do.

If they found bacteria, you need to find out what kind and how you should be treating that.

UPDATE: It was never cultured The first test came back as bacteria, but he was confused because he said it looked like herpes! the second test the did not tell me the results, they prescribed famciclovir.

the sore has cleared up, but the sore groin pain has remained.

Syphilis wouldn't cause PID, and wouldn't cause arthritis for years, if ever.

The only way you will know what you have is through testing.  Its unfortunate that no one cultured the sore.

syphilis: negative
HIV: negative

I looked on the web and Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Syphilis can all give you:

pelvic inflammatory disease and septic arthritis

Did the Dr give you any STD tests or just treat you? The sore might be herpes, could be syphillis(syphillis is rare though). The other symptoms I do not know. Doesn't really link up to an STD. My first guess is you have a viral infection. But I would suggest finding a good Dr and get a full STD test.
