Kommerell Diverticulum with aberrent subclavian artery

by Betty3838, Sep 16, 2008 02:51PM
I have dysphagia which is getting worse over the last few years.  I have a documented aberrent right subclavian artery with a Kommerell diverticulum at the base of the subclavian.  My barium swallow/esophagram showed moderate to marked compression of the esophagus from the aberrent subclavian.  I have been to see a vascular surgeon, and a cardiac surgeon and both do not want to do anything about it.  I have high blood pressure and my mother died of an aortic aneurysm.
I think it is smart to surgically fix this while I am relatively young (47 years old) and healthy.  Why wait and see if the diverticulum causes problems.  I think a subclavian bypass and graft of the aortic arch to remove the diverticulum is the best thing to do.  Do you think I should pursue this with another surgeon or are they correct in telling me to leave it?
