Adult Hormonal Acne

I recently went to a dermatologist who believed that I had adult hormonal acne. So far I would get one or two acne just before my period and they form these cyst like nodules (?). This last cycle, I have one almost an inch in diameter and they change in size throughout the day.
When is a good time to get this treated and who normally treats this? The dermatologist suggested I speak to my OB/GYN doctor about the same issue....
Is there anything to prevent these nodules from forming?

Avoid the mini-pill (everyday pill) hormonal IUD and Depot-shot, all of which can make acne worse.
Taking a combined oral contraceptive pill will help to clear acne. Certain brands are particularly effective. Diane 35 (called Dianette in UK) contains oestrogen and an anti-androgen and is licenced as an anti-acne medication. Ortho Tri-Cyclen (called Cilest in the UK) is also good at clearing acne. Speak to your doctor about these.
You don't say how old you are but the risk of complications with the pill increases when the patient is over 35, especially if she is overweight or a heavy smoker.
