My 5 year old behavior

by johannap, Sep 23, 2008 04:08PM
My son just turned 5 last week, he also started school a month ago. Two week into school I started getting phone calls and emails from his teacher. He hasnt been listening, hitting and saying bad words. He did preschool for 2 years and we never had any complaints about this behavior. I am very strict on what toys we buy him, or what he watches on Tv ( thats if we have time after homework and dinner). He is enrolled in after school activities. I dont know what to do? Can any one help me?

Have you asked him if he likes school get some feedback from him ask him what they do there do they draw and color and read stories, Have you seen him with the Teacher what is the communication like ,is she welcoming and does he get enough stimulatiuon at school sometimes they act out if they are bored. Has he heard bad words anywhere he is copying from another child he sounds as if nhe has no problem at hime and was okay in pre school so good idea to check out the Dynamics at this school.

Thanks for writing back. I've checked out the classroom a few times, the teacher seems great. Most of the the things she is teaching the class things he already learned from preschool?  He says he likes school, friends and his teacher. However, he is one of the youngest and seems to be a follower, which scares me.

I'm wondering if your son is tired - school as well as after-school activities.  Sometimes all of this can be overwhelming to a young child.  Just a thought ....

Good you check on the school and the teacher sounds okay, maybe he needs more stimulation especially if he is a bright boy and has learned the same things in pre-school, possibly they will move on to more challenging subjects shortly.if children get bored they act out in frustration , I guess if you were the youngest you would be a follower  maybe that will change as he gets more confidant ,.if you dont use bad words at home, he has learnt them at school and it is times when the Teacher isnt watching possibly that it happens, the other children are older and it probably has come from them.

I'm having similar problems with my 5 year-old son, minus the hitting and swearing.

I'm thinking it might be a transition issue, where he feels thrown out of sync by the change and can't adjust. I'm still looking at the problem, so if I get anything useful I'll post it here.
