Pain in penis

by magic851, Sep 24, 2008 01:51PM
I am 69 years old. On May 5 of this year I underwent a radical prostatectomy The retro-pubic method was used. The catheter was removed two weeks later. Since then I have been experiencing a stinging sensation at the tip of my penis and soreness in the shaft. In late August I visited my urologist to go over my PSA results ( < 0.04 ng/mL ) and discussed my soreness and stinging problem. After a urine analysis was taken, which showed no infections, he indicated it was probably non-specific urethritis and the symptoms should go away. During the night the symptoms wake me (about every two hours ). I urinate when I waken and the symptoms seem to subside. When I wake for the day my penis seems to be slightly swollen. Wrapping it in a more than just warm and moist towel makes the swelling diminish. During the day I frequently urinate ( about every two hours ) and normally do not experience any of the symptoms. Early on I started the Keegel exercises for bladder control. These exercises worked well but I discontinued them because I learned that they might be contributing to my problem. Thank you in advance for any help and guidance you can provide.

In the process of removing your prostate, the nerves to your penis that enable an erection are disturbed. As they heal, I can understand your experiencing discomfort. Also, after this procedure, there is a tendency to lose penile length. This is thought to be a blood flow issue. Some centers are trying what is termed "penile rehabilitation." Low dose PDE-5 inhibitors such as Viagra, Levitra  and Cialis are being given several times per week at bedtime with the idea that penile blood flow will be enhanced and a return to spontaneous erections will be more likely to occur. Maybe penile length will more readily
maintained, also.
All of this being said, I have not had a patient with your complaint. I do think that you should return to your Keigel's   exercises and by definitely discuss your discomfort with your urologist.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. Pain in the penis and swelling could be due to balanitis, mild prostatitis. But as you have underwent prostatectomy we can rule out prostatitis. In balanitis there is swelling of the organ, redness and itching sensation. But the symptoms you have mentioned seem to be non-specific. As you already underwent urine examination and PSA checks, there is less chances of balanitis or urinary tract infection.

I would suggest you to drink a lot of water. If the symptoms increase in intensity consult your urologist with urine examination report.

Take care.

I am able to understand your problem since I have gone through similar situation post my prostate surgery in June this year and would like to share my experience. As for me  now, the problems have almost vanished and I am almost noemal now. My surgeon had then explained that when the wounds are still fresh or not completely healed such simptoms are common. From your discrption I feel the surgical wounds may not have healed well. I tried warm fomention by siting in the bath tub for 10/15 mins which helped soothen the scrotal region and the pain reduced. Also I reduced the water intake especially after 8 pm. which has helped me. I don't get more than twice during the night. So I enjoy undisturbed sleep.
