New Puppy has Giardia have many questions

by MixPuppy84, Sep 24, 2008 08:35PM
Hey everyone,
well my wife and I just bought a new puppy from a pet store and the 2nd day we had him, he stopped acting like a puppy and slept ALL day yesterday, wouldn't really do much and wouldn't eat. Then, around 5pm last night he started vomiting and being lethargic. We took him to the vet, and they said he had Giardia. They administered a shot and gave us anti-biotics. They told us that today he would be more like his old self. This morning he was, he even drank quite a bit by himself. I gave him his first dose of his meds and then an hour later he was back to being lethargic, and wouldn't drink or eat. He as grown very skinny, and very weak so we have been force feeding him 2 tbsp of water 3times an hour, and 2tbsp of wet/watered down puppy food the Vet gave us, every hour.
We have not seen a change in him yet and are starting to get very worried... What else should we do??? it's been 24hrs since he started his antibiotics (the shot that was administered) Is this normal for Giardia? Please tell us if he's on track to recovery or if we should be very concerned..

Thank you,
Jordan M. Peltz

I would contact the vet again.   We had a dog with Giardia but she wasn't real lethargic.
She wouldn't eat or drink and would vomit and have diarhea.     Good luck!

Our puppy acted totally normal with Giardia--I'd take him right back to the vet.

Did your Vet find the Giardia in a stool sample? Or did he just assume? I thought Giardia presented itself with bloody diarrhea. I also thought it was a parasite. My dog was given something to settle the stomach and 3 days of liquid parasitic. I don't remember an antibiotic. (Although it's possible). He acted perfectly normal, too. Ate, drank, did everything.......I think somethings wrong here....Could it be Parvo? You need to get another opinion, quickly.......Let us know....Karla

Be sure you keep records of EVERYTHING.  The pet store will usually either reimburse your illness related expenses for a period of time, or offer to replace the puppy.
