Pituitary microadenoma

hi, i have had very infrequent (4-5month gaps) periods since I first menstruated. I was referred to a endocronologist and it was identified that i had hypothyroidism. I have been treated for this for 2 years, . However although other symptoms have been eased - such as excessive tiredness and my thyroid levels were returned within normal ranges, I still was not having monthly cycles. I just had a MRI done and it identified a "2.5mm diamter rounded non-enhancing focus along the floow of the anterior pituitary gland. This could possible represent a pituitary microadenoma." What does this mean? How possible is it that is a 'microadenoma' and how will they determine if it is or not? I don't know whether to go back to see my doctor or not as i'm sick of tests ect and only want to if they will actually take action.

Thanks for your help :) You mentioned they could cause hyperthyroidism - could it also have anything to do with my hypothyroidism and menstruation problems?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
Pituitary micradenomas can be asymptomatic if small. However sometimes they can produce symptoms due to pressure on the optic nerve which is close by resulting in blurry vision or vision loss.
They can also produce hormonal dysfunction. Prolactinomas are most common tumors which secrete prolactin hormone. Other tumors can cause cushing’s syndrome, acromegaly, hyperthyroidism.
I would suggest you to please discuss these findings with your treating doctor. If the tumor is inactive it does not require removal. However gamma knife radiation has to be considered for secretory tumors.
