pain in outer thigh
i have been having pain in my outer left thigh for a couple of months now. if i take aspirin it goes away. i can't sleep on left side. if i sleep on right side, it doesn't hurt. several months ago i had very bad pain in my lower back and left side of butt. i went to orthopedist who sent me for physical therapy, the therapist said it is coming from my hip. i now have the pain in thigh. what type of doctor should i go to.

You are right. Rheumatologists are not joint specialists, exactly. “Rheumatology is a sub-specialty in internal medicine and pediatrics, devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. Yes, an orthopedist will be able to test for all problems related to joints and bones. However it will be a good idea to consult a physician too simultaneously. Maybe you will need to go to a neurologist later on.

thank you for your advice. i didn't know a rheumatologist was a joint specialist, i thought they were more for arthritis. an orthopedist wouldn't be able to test for the same things?

Many possibilities are there for your symptoms.It can be muscle strain, tendonitis(irritation and inflammation of the tendons),bursitis(inflammation of the bursae i.e small sacs around the joint which cushion it),rheumatoid arthritis(diagnosed by ESR,CRP and Rheumatoid factor in the blood) ,gout(a disease created by a buildup of uric acid in the joints) and peripheral artery disease leading to claudication.Even back pain caused due to number of factors like pinched sciatic nerve(sciatica),spinal stenosis,disc degeration, or herniation can also cause referred pain in the thigh.
Without physical examination,it is difficult to confirm a diagnosis.Pls get yourself evaluated by a rheumatologist(joint specialist) as soon as possible.You may need investigations like x-rays hip and lower spine,CT/MRI,blood tests and duplex ultrasound to confirm a diagnosis.
For the pain,give rest to the part and elevate the part while resting,Apply cold compresses and take non steroidal anti inflammatory pain reliever like ibuprofen which is available over the counter.You can also apply muscle relaxant cream on the thigh.
