My husband was just recently diagnosed with sphinctor of the oddi dysorder. He has not had his gallbladder removed, due to the fact that the doctors feel that it will be of no benefit. They have suggested that he eat a low fat diet and taper off of the narcotics that he is currently on. Is there anything else that he can do? What types of foods should he try to avoid and do the narcotics really have an effect on this condition?

What kind of pain does you husband have to be on narcotics? I am on them 24/7 due to intense pain that radiates from the front and then to the right side and to the back. I have had several tests and it is not showing anything as of yet. I did have my gallbladder out in Aug. I want off the pain killers but the pain is so intense that I don't know how to do it.

Thank you for your comments. Yes, we have been informed and have now confirmed that the narcotics have had a negative impact on his body. He was diagnosed as a result of many test but the final one was a HIDA scan. His ejection fraction was 15%. He was refered to a surgeon for GB removal and he was not convinced that the HIDA scan was accurate. He told us that he feel that he will not benefit from the removal. I am still skeptical. He was also informed that there was a sure diagnosis of hyperemesis syndrome and possible sphinctor of oddi disorder. I am very nervous. he have heard a lot of scary things about the sphinctorotomy. It is said to be very dangerous. We have been keeping our fingers crossed in hopes for a "good" answer. He have a referal to go to Mass General in Boston next month. I dont know if it could every seem like it was further away....We are eager to once again have the ability to live a "normal" life. Yes, the narcotics can have a large impact on the condition. Narcotic-based meds tend to raise the pressure in the common bile duct and can make the condition worse.

How was he diagnosed? Was an ERCP with manometry done? Was the sphincter cut because elevated pressure levels were found?
If he still has his GB, was any sludge found?
After the meds are phased out, what is your doc suggesting he try in their place?
