causes of acne

Have there been any studies relating to the possible influence of emotional states and acne?  Is it possible that extreme anxiety might contribute to acne?

Hi. Acne is caused when androgens (male hormones found in both male and females) stimulate the sebaceous (oil) glands. This oil mixes with bacteria on the skin leading to acne.
To treat acne you need to either dry up the oil or kill the bacteria.
To dry up the oil try an over the counter product containing Salicylic acid, Benzoyl peroxide or nicotinamide. If these are ineffective your doctor can prescribe a stronger lotion containing Clindamycin or Adapalene.
Your doctor can also prescribe an oral antibiotic such as Oxytetracycline. This will kill most of the bacteria responsible for acne and the rest will die or be killed by your immune system.
Eloise.
