I was born without a thyroid

hi everyone,

i am male, 22 years of age and i was born without a thyroid.  the docs discovered that i didnt have a thyroid when i was 2 weeks old. I saw a physician every 6 months throughout my childhood to keep a close track of my growth.  I have been taking 200mg of thyroxine every day since i was born.  People always ask me if its annoying, but I dont think it is. i am used to taking it every day now and its just one of them things that i just do.

Apparently there are 1 in 15000 babies born without a thyroid gland.

I am 6 foot 2, 80kg's, and healthy.  The only thing I am concerned about is acne, i have had moderate acne since i was 16 and not sure if the medication has anything to do with it or not.  If anyone knows anything about it, id love to hear some feed back.  And i would also like to know if it would have any effect on me being able to have kids....

This discussion is related to i was born without a THYROID GLAND, WAS ANY ONE ELSE BORN without one?.

I'm a 22 year old female and was born without thyroid. It has not affected me in anyway apart from I get cold very easily. Acne has never really been an issue with me. Have you been to your doc? There are some good tablets that begin with 'oxy...' (sorry it's one of those extra long words that are unpronoucable), but being female I do have the good option of birth control pills to clear any spots up.

I've read some discussions and to me some people make it sound like it's the end of the world...but like you said it's just the norm! like brushing your teeth! I take 100mg of levothyroxine a day which has been consistant for years and go for yearly blood tests. I'm 5'1 but the height isn't related to the thyroid just a 'petite' family! There is one thing I am wondering, as I am very petite and from reading symptoms it says that with hypothyroidism you practically gain the weight and I really don't. So unsure whether because my throid is controlled I don't gain weight.

The only time I've been told to be careful and to see my doctor is if I ever get pregnant as it needs to be monitored throughout the birth...this is just a precaution as I would be carrying the baby and can effect me rather than the baby. For a male I very much doubt it would effect fertility.

Hope it helps.

WELCOME to the COMMUNITY .. if you do a search under our commnity archives you'll find a few others have been born w/o a thyroid~!  My SIL was born with 1/2 a thyroid and didn't know until she had surgery and they were shocked .. her nodule was so large it filled up the other side of the thyroid and on ultrasound appeared to be a normal thyroid.  Even though she did not have cancer, she ended upon Synthroid cause now she has no thyroid.
