Worried about atypia

I had to have a wire biopsy, in which they found flat epithelial atypia.  I was then scheduled for a surgical biopsy, in which they found no cancer.  Thank God.  I had the same procedure done approx. 17 years ago in which it  was also benign.  At that time they didn"t say anything about atypia.

I do worry about the other parts of my body.  Could it apear in other parts of the body?  The Dr. hasmade me an appointment to discuss medication.  I do not want to have to go on anymore meds.  I take enough because of fibromyalgia.  Hopefully I can get some infomation on diet to help with estrogen level.
Thank you, Janet

This discussion is related to tamoxifin and tachycardia.

I don't believe this type of atypia is found in areas of the body other than the breast, but as Japdip mentioned, it is a marker of increased breast cancer risk in the future. I had the same experience as you, with a SCNB followed by a excisional biopsy, with fortunately benign results.

We are blessed to be forewarned as to future cancer risk. It is helpful to eat a low fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables, but do watch out for the soybeans! There is currently mixed research on them, as in some cases they are protective against cancer yet they contain isoflavones that have estrogen-like activity that can cause certain cancers to grow more quickly. The American Cancer Society has a helpful page explaining the benefits and risk factors of soy products:

Increasing your exercise is beneficial for both reducing breast cancer risk and helping with fibromyalgia symptoms, especially stretching exercises and low impact activities like swimming, tai chi, yoga, walking, and bicycling. But if you've been away from exercise lately, build up slowly...

Best of luck!

Thank you so much for your comments.
I feel so much better now.
Yes, that is my only bad habit.  (coffee)
Just hearing this from you , I have made up my mind to be strong and ease my way off coffee.  I do really enjoy it though , so it will be difficult.
I have also decided to watch my fat content. I do eat pretty healthy, lots of fruit and vegeys , but I love dessert.  I have to work on that too.
My pain from fibromyalgia has slowed me down quite a bit, I am not as active as I used to be. I do walk a couple times a week  I need to get back to the gym.  Even if it is just water arobics.  I can do it!
Thanks again,  Janet

The findings you mention are found fairly often in the breast .... this is NOT cancer but is considered in a group of conditions that are at times referred to as pre-cancerous as they do increase your risk of developing cancer in the future. The appointment you speak of is no doubt with the Oncologist and the medication may well be Tamoxifen which is an Estrogen blocker and used to decrease the future cancer risk. There are some things recommended for Fibrocystic Breast Disease which is related to the production of Estrogen. One is the avoidance of caffeine and there are some vitamin suppliments that may help but of course Tamoxifen is the standard for blocking the production of Estrogen.
