I feel u bro. I have had them for 8 long years. My whole social life changed. It also made me a bitter and self concious person. Quick to say "**** are you lookin at." Now I am humble and learned to deal with it. I found most people don't notice or even care. Don't get me wrong I would give my left nut to permanantly get it off my lip. Don't waste years like I did. Look for solutions but don't let it affect the way you live your life. Halph of the way people see you is how u project yourself. So I say **** it. Every body has some kind of issue! Life is still great. Pray and be healthy

What's going on everybody. I'm a 21 year old male and have had Fordyce spots on my upper lip for a few years now. Although I haven't met anybody else with the same condition as myself I can only assume mine is pretty bad; e.g. spots all over my upper lip. When they first appeared I freaked out - I had no clue what they were and immediately went online to do research. Since then I have found many informational sites, forums, etc. describing the condition as "overacting sebaceous glands...harmless...not an STD..." etc. etc. Ok, yes it is wonderful to hear that it's not an infectious disease, but that doesn't solve my main issue - how extremely self-conscious I am each and every time I talk to to somebody, eat with somebody, etc. When I was in highschool, and the spots were not present, I got a lot of girls (I'm not bragging). Now I get none. I don't know whether it's me holding myself back or them finding me disgusting; all I know is I haven't gotten any in a long time. This needs to change, and I'm sure you all understand how I'm feeling. Yes, I can take accountability for not pursuing many girls because of my new lack of confidence, but I refuse to pretend like it's all in my head because I will learn to play cricket before I learn to play myself.

So here's my question to the doctors on this website, or any doctors who might come across this website and feel they can help: What is the best way to treat this condition? Many sites I already visited continually say "no treatment is needed, this is a normal condition found in over 60% of males" but let's be serious now, extreme cases look very gross and need to be treated, "normal" or not. I've read about CO2 lasers, electro-cauterization, thermo-something or other, tretinoin creams and all kinds of treatments. I understand laser surgery is risky because the lips might scar, and it sounds like the spots come back after a few weeks anyways, but are there must be something I can do. Does the tretinoin cream really work or will it just burn my lips? Is Accutane going to be worth the side-effects? ARE THERE ANY DOCTORS OUT THERE WHO COULD HELP AT ALL? Who are they? Where are they? If I had $1,000,000 to spend on this, who is the best dermatologist in the country to visit?

I apologize for any expressed anger in this posting - in all honesty I am on the brink of complete hopelessness and am afraid of what might happen if I cross that line. I come from a great family, a great area and feel blessed to live the life that I do - but these Fordyce spots negate all of which I should be thankful for and draw a constant depressive cloud over my head wherever I go, 24/7. Call me dramatic, but don't judge a man from your world but from his. I hope somebody somewhere out there reads these words and can help. Thank you for your time.

I'm in my 30's as well with the same condition on my upper lip.  It is the same as everyone describes.  I've had it for about a year now.  The texture of the skin feels like it has changed.  It's not as smooth.  My dermatoligist confirmed the condition as fordyce.  Of course as most have heard, it's a normal skin condition and they are reluctant to treat it.  All I use is chapstick.

I've reseached it on and off quite a bit in the last year but have found no definitive treatment.  I'd like to try CO2 laser or tretinoin gel or cream.  It's good to see the posts.  Especially the up to date one's.  Maybe with enough interest, we'll find something that works.

Hi there,

I'm a 41 year old male and I've had fordyce condition for the last two years.  It started out as only one spot on my upper lip and then blossomed to about 50 or more all on the upper lip.  My dermatologist has me on 0.05% Tretinonin cream.  This I believe has helped to keep them from growing large but they're still there.  I often get anxious because they are in such a visible place on my face.  The pigment has changed on some areas of my lip from using tretinonin but I'm willing to live with that for now than have them grow bigger. I hope this helps.

Hi,

This could be - pearly penile papules or fordyce spots. You would need to consult your doctor for a confirmed diagnosis.

'Pearly penile papules are multiple, small (about 1-3mm) papules running around the circumference of the crown of the glans penis. They typically develop in men aged 20 to 40, and around 10 per cent of all men are affected. They may be mistaken for warts, are not infectious and require no treatment.'

'Fordyce spots are small (1-5mm) bright red or purple papules that can appear on the glans, shaft or scrotum and usually affect younger men. They may occur as a solitary lesion, but frequently appear in crops of 50 to 100. They are painless and not itchy, but may cause embarrassment because of their appearance, or a fear that they might be sexually transmitted. '

Let us know if you need any further information.

Post us about what your doctor advises.

Regards.
