Diabetic with blood sugar level of 50

by meikman, May 25, 2007 12:00AM
My husband has Diabetes now for a couple years.  After not taking care of it like eating right, taking meds he is now doing better.  His A1c have been 11.8 and now is down to 6.8.

He said that today when he took his blood level it was 50.  First that's hard to believe usually in the past it almost never was below 250 but lately he has been keeping it around the normal range but not below 110.  If ones blood sugar is that low wouldn't there be complications?  Should there be something that we need to watch out for?

If my blood sugar goes down that low I begin to sweat and shake. I'm not sure what the low number is when one goes into a coma, but that is tha danger. When I get lower than 100 I drink a small glass of chocolate milk to get it up quickly.  Many people use Glucose tablets that they carry with them.  The problem is that if you spike it up with pure sugar it overcorrects in a short time.  You need to add some protein, such as milk.

There are definate severe problems that happen with low blood sugar.  It's possibe that your husband needs to have his meds adjusted.

Good luck,
Janni

First off, congrats on your hubby's A1c. 6.8 is still a tad high but much better than than the 11.8.

When was the last time your hubby calibrated his meter? Also double check the test strips for they too have expiration dates.
