Calf muscle seizure

by Northern Strider, Mar 08, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 51 years old male

I have been running in sub zero weather in Montréal for many years.

A couple of weeks ago I got a cramp in my calf that forced me to stop running. The calf remained sore for the following week. I could barely walk on it.

After a week the sensitivity had diminished enough for me to think I could run. But about 15 minutes into my run the muscle seized up in a cramp again and I had to limp home.

I have been training for the 35 years and I never felt anything like that before.

The siege of the cramp seems to be very deep. Ice and Vitamin I (ibuprofen ;-)) have aleviate the pain but,I went shopping today  and I could feel the cramp creeping back.

Any help understanding this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I am a runner too, but also a podiatrist.  This is probably unlikely, but have you considered DVT (deep venous thrombosis)?  In other words, a clot deep within the calf.  Is it swollen or reddened?  I must say, though, I have seen DVT's without those signs.  In any case, a DVT is a medical emergency....just so you know.
