Bottom line is the medication suggested by whoever on the recommendation of a world class hematologist was bogus and dangerous. Anything else was just noise. You are free to decipher in any way one chooses. Personally I disagree with your assessment of who did what and when, but does it really matter?  Bottom line is the person who was given bogus information, inquired as to the safety of this hormone with her Doc, who supported current best practices in the care and treatment of HCV.

At the end of the day, that is all that is really important, as we are speaking of real humans here, not rats.

Dismissed by you. Oh! The horror!...If your nature didn't lead you to trample everyone in your path with vindictive glee, you might be tolerable. Snook has politics, is that what you call that, as I understood it was called plagiarism., that is cutting and pasting others copyrighted pieces and claiming the work as one's own. Politics, hmm that's a new one. I am so fortunate to have had the pleasure of your instruction this fine day. but in reality, those who usually incur the term wackjob are those such as yourself who feel they need to claim they speak for others, who assume those others are nodding their heads in agreement with you. It is usually not my style, but you would be surprised to know that aside from your delusional thoughts, many here actually think you are the wackjob, and I would concur, as it is obvious it is indeed you who has the fixation on snook my dear child.  Now please go along and play with the other children, as you are way out of your league, way out!  Thank you. We're all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view

Your obsession with Snook and his politics is starting to seem a bit creepy.  Ya might want to rein it in a bit or else you'll certainly be dismissed by me, and others, as being a complete whack job.

I have no idea what you're talking about.  I'm looking at this thread and you're the one -- not Snook -- who brought politics into the discussion about Melatonin.  And I don't even see a reference to Hillary Clinton in this thread, so I'm baffled as to what you're talking about.

But I do agree with your comment that being called a liberal is insulting.  It's certainly a label I'd never want to wear.

For the blonde one who seems to have the inability to speak, or Tall Blonde…Please read as it shows a consistent pattern by Snook to blame all the woes of the world on Liberals. Below is the reply to snook,  if for some reason, other the than whiteout on your monitor you missed the thread…here are the pertinent parts. The boy was scolded as he should be for endangering someone’s health. He is not only dangerous, but very rude and I might add crude.

Snook, please in the future refrain from advising people to take anything as you are merely a child and certainly not a licensed medical professional. Melatonin is very liver toxic and certainly not advised for those with liver complications.

Warnings:

Before taking Melatonin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding Do not take Melatonin if you have liver disease or neurological disorders, like seizures (uncontrollable shaking)
Do not take Melatonin if you have depression

First, let me just applaud our liberal politicians and agencies for allowing feeble minded individuals such as yourself computer privledges to access the outside world..It must be lonely and frustrating only being allowed a few minutes computer time a day in the sanitarium. And I can honestly say, it is an HONOR to be the focus of your privledge time..

From Snook….
You can thank liberal socialists like Hillary Clinton for implicating laws such as HIPPA, that prevent "coordinators" such as the one you speak of, from obtaining list of such patients.

HIPPA is a privacy law, CREATED by Clinton.. This law prevents such lists as stated above from being released, nothing more.
Where did your biased interpretation of my post originate?

Even funnier.. An adjusted is needed in your single sided liberal California logic. Reread my post my dear.
HIPPA is a privacy law, CREATED by Clinton..

Reality……

You may find it interesting that is was a bill put forward by Congressman Hobson a REPUCLICIAN that the United States of America has the current protection of the HIPAA laws.

If one would look they would find that it was not Hillary Clinton but George W. Bush, who in the early 1990s, called a group of health care industry leaders together to discuss how health care administrative costs could be reduced. This group concluded that this could best be done by increasing the use of electronic data interchange within the industry. This advisory group later organized as the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange, which was initially co-chaired by the Presidents of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and the Health Insurance Association of America, which represents commercial insurers.

WEDI conducted a number of studies to determine how this might be accomplished, and eventually recommended that Federal legislation be passed to ensure that a consistent set of standards could be used across all states. Many of WEDI's recommendations were included in the Clinton Health Plan, which failed to pass, and similar provisions were included in other draft legislation. They were eventually included in the House version of HIPAA under the sponsorship of Congressman Hobson (R-OH), and survived a House/Senate Conference thanks partly to extensive industry support. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was finally signed into law on August 21, 1996

PS: The United States of America was formed by Republican Liberals, there fine folks who took the writings of John Hampden and Algernon Sydney formed what is the basis of the United States this day. They would heap scorn on those who today proclaim themselves to be Republicans.

Wow, McCarthyism at it’s best. Your post is an outright misrepresentation of the truth. For one I was not the person who brought up politics, Snook was. He for some reason called me a Liberal, which I personally find insulting, but, then again most of his ilk when presented with the truth, find calling a person a liberal or some such nonsense a method to prove that they are right. As for your contention that I would need someone to defend the truth, well I will let that one lie where you laid it, on the floor. My only other comment to Snook was that his indication that Hillary Clinton was responsible for the HIPAA laws was so far from reality, that I suggested he actually do some research before accusing people of things they had nothing to do with.

He is often misinformed and has on many occasions, misrepresented the truth. With politics this is not a concern. With HCV, one who claims a Doctor suggested a treatment or OTC medication and used the Doctor's name, in that context, I will respond as I have met the Doctor he speaks of and know full well this Doctor would never recommend this OTC medication for those suffering from liver disease. If you feel the need to defend this person who presents information that is dangerous and backs this information up with anecdotal information suggesting a falsehood, well you are in fine company with Snook. I would suggest you keep your politics out of a HCV support forum, unless your comments have something to do with political action surrounding the betterment of those suffering from HCV.

Remember the first rule of holes. Stop digging.

I highly doubt you actually know what a Republican is or actually means. It certainly has nothing to do with the current GOP in the United States. Sugesting all are Liberal based on the fantasy of one little boy is shows a definate lack of simple reasoning.

My heart is warmed that you spoke to your Doc, whose info id current and in line with best practices for those impacted with any form of liver disease. Hopefully some of the other good suggestions from others who replied to this thread will assist you with your sleep patterns. There were some excellent suggestions that did not involve further distress to your liver.

One would suspect that a "rat" study is all one needs to ingest a hormone that may cause great distress to one's liver. Any competent hepatologist will acknowledge that Melatonin has caused and will continue to cause serious problems with those with compromised liver architecture. If you feel the need to support taking this hormone because it is a republican family value or some other form of twisted logic, by all means please ingest.

By saying you highly doubt that I "know what a Republican is" is proof of YOUR lack of reasoning skills.  What a dumb thing to say.

So what did you think of the rat study?  Your insults weren't effective in distracting me from the fact that you didn't even acknowledge it. Can I assume that the study has put you in your place?  Or would that be my lack of simple reasoning skills tricking me again? LOL

Andy, my dear, you were the one who initiated combining political insults with your attacks on Melatonin.  I was simply continuing the conversation within the context YOU established.  I gather from your frustrated tone that this isn't going the way you had hoped when you decided to attack Snook on the basis of his age and politics.  You only succeeded in demonstrating your own stupidity and intolerance -- two traits that you've been unsuccessful in pinning on conservatives.

And by the way, I assure you that Snook has many, many allies on this board.  They may be quiet because of their general disdain for conflict, but they exist, nonetheless.  I doubt that anyone would defend how you presented yourself on this thread.

.....well, at least seems to be for rat livers.  Read further:

Melatonin prevents experimental liver cirrhosis induced by thioacetamide in rats

Adolfo Cruz1, Francisco J. Padillo1, Eva Torres1, Carmen M. Navarrete2, Juan R. Muñoz-Castañeda2, Francisco J. Caballero2, Javier Briceño1, Trinidad Marchal3, Isaac Túnez4, Pedro Montilla4, Carlos Pera1 and Jordi Muntané2

Abstract: Liver cirrhosis is a critical stage of chronic liver diseases that can produce liver failure, portal hypertension and hepatocarcinoma. Sustained oxidative stress plays a key role in cell damage and fibrosis induced during liver cirrhosis. We evaluated the effect of oxidative stress regulation by melatonin on the development of parenchymal destruction and stellate cell activation in experimental liver cirrhosis. Melatonin was administered to rats with liver cirrhosis induced by thioacetamide (TAA) for 1 or 3 months. Liver injury was assessed by serological analysis, as well as hematoxylin-eosin staining and the in situ apoptosis detection assay in liver sections. Oxidative stress was evaluated by lipoperoxide and reduced glutathione levels, and by the measurement of catalase and superoxide dismutase activities in liver and serum respectively. The activation of stellate cells was evaluated by α-smooth muscle actin expression in liver sections. Our results showed that TAA induced oxidative stress with extensive tissue damage and enhanced α-smooth muscle actin expression in liver. Melatonin prevented the oxidative stress-related changes associated with TAA toxicity. In conclusion, the study showed that melatonin prevents the tissue damage and fibrosis associated with TAA-induced liver cirrhosis in rats.

Andy...I've not read any comments from you before.  It seems like you threw the first stone here...if you don't agree with someone why not say it but don't be demeaning.

Snook...is there any truth in what Andy says about melontonin (sp?)?  If so present your research like you always do.  I have always appreciated your HCV info.  Also I didn't realize that you are to the right...I tend to lean to the left and I still like you.

Let's continue to support each other through this horrible disease.

You may be surprised as to how many take me seriously...but really who cares, then again FYI, as there are NO studies that have been done on the effects from Melatonin and liver disease for obvious ethical reasons. There are numerous warning for those with liver disease to avoid this product.

Melatonin

Other Names: MEL, MLT, N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine
When should I be careful taking it?
Although melatonin may be given in hospitals to premature infants at risk of developing lung problems, the use of supplemental melatonin for children is not recommended. Because naturally-produced melatonin has a role in the development of sexual organs, melatonin supplementation could interfere with normal sexual development.

In high doses, melatonin may hamper the ability to get pregnant by decreasing female fertility. Women who are trying to conceive should not take melatonin. Because it is not known how melatonin affects pregnant women or the fetus, melatonin should be avoided during pregnancy.

Melatonin is broken down in the liver, so individuals with known or suspected liver diseases should avoid taking it. If liver function is diminished, high levels of melatonin could build up in the blood, possibly leading to unwanted side effects.
Melatonin may promote both immune response and inflammation, making it inappropriate for individuals with autoimmune conditions. Various autoimmune conditions include:
"Is melatonin associated with the development of autoimmune hepatitis?" Melatonin is a neurohormone produced by the human pineal gland that plays a role in the regulation of many physiologic processes and has been proposed as a therapy for everything from insomnia to metastatic carcinoma. Melatonin is available in the United States without prescription, and adverse effects appear to be uncommon. However, because melatonin appears to have immunomodulatory properties, the potential exists for the development of autoimmune-related side effects. We describe a patient in whom characteristic clinical and laboratory features of autoimmune hepatitis developed after beginning melatonin therapy for the treatment of insomnia. Liver biopsy demonstrated histologic features of autoimmune hepatitis. Rapid symptomatic and biochemical improvement resulted from the initiation of immunosuppressive therapy; however, hepatitis recurred after the withdrawal of steroid therapy. The temporal relation observed between melatonin use and the development of autoimmune hepatitis raises the possibility that the drug might be involved in the pathogenesis of this patient's autoimmune disease.Hong YG, Riegler JL Department of Gastroenterology, Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, USA., J Clin Gastroenterol 1997 Jul;25(1):376-378, PMID: 9412927, UI: 98074407

My little friend, your delusions as to your assertion that I have anything to do with other forums is again your own personal delusion. I have been a member of this forum for many years. You are as per the usual, out of your league, this I suspect may be the need for you to play Doctor. Your claim that many Hospitals use this sCAM medication for those suffering with liver disease is as outrageous as most of your political comment. Did Rush tell you this? Remember the first rule of holes is, STOP DIGGING SUNSHINE. Apply that to yourself, as again you are very wrong with no semblance of fact to back up your suggestion that those suffering from HCV to ingest Melatonin. There is a shortage of available livers NOW, one should not be putting stress on that supply by playing Doctor.

The facts speak for themselves, as not only are your political discussions tainted with political comment from your heroes Peabody Bill and Rush Limbaugh, it seems you have moved up to endangering people with HCV with your comments as to what they should ingest. Your narrow-minded political opinions only hurt you, whereas your new need to play Doctor is dangerous.

I would stronly advise anyone to disregard Snooks medical suggestions and place as much creedance his Dcotor playing as most to do his cut and paste political comments.

Regardless of the name dropping one with his world famous doc, Melatonin has caused serious liver injury to those suffering from HCV, including liver death. Rather than defend a stupid post with your usual anti-liberal babblings, why not worry about those who your dangerous suggestions may hurt. One may be lead to believe that like most conservatives, life is far less important than seeming to be correct all the time. I do trust you did read my comments about Hillary Clinton as to your assumption that the next President of United States had something to do with the HIPAA laws when in fact it was Bush’s Dad and the republican congress that passed that legislation. In fact to date most of your political statements are incorrect as well as your statements dealing with HCV. It really takes so few moments to check things out before one posts, why not make the attempt the next time your feel the desire to inundate us with your lack of knowledge.

to date my friend, YOU have yet to stump me on ANY discussion. I know that is why you come to this forum, in a desperation attempt to bait me into engaging in your demented illusional games.

I did see your blog on Hillary, yet felt no need to embarass you, or attack you such as YOU have continuosly done towards me. Besides that, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE!

It is a shame to see the desperation that the Delphi community has sunk to. I know you miss my logical explanations and itellect, but the ENTIRE community you represent in TAINTED!!
The agenda MIGHT have been sincere at one time, but has since been lost.

Again, I guess you failed to follow the links I posted above, as seems MANY Universities and hospitals use Melatonin.

Keep digging that hole my friend, soon it will be toooo deep to climb out.

For anyone interested, or hesitant about the substance...The two links I posted above are posted on prestigous schools and medical centers, not just blogs. One is the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and another in the University of Maryland official site.

The following link is a Faq page about the substance, which originates from an article published in Newsweek.

http://www.melatonin.com/melatonin-faq.php

Sorry if there was any forms of miscommunication on my part, as I am not "playing" Doctor as another member has suggested. My intentions where to merely offer a "personal" suggestion, of a substance that worked for me, nothing more..
AGAIN, the sign on the door reads: PATIENT TO PATIENT
