Nausea in middle of night any ideas

Well my husband is doing well with his treatment.  He's not really experiencing any side effects that I can tell and he actually has alot of energy.  Doc says this happens sometimes. 30 years of Hep C takes it toll to the point one doesn't know what normal is and sometimes people have more energy on treatment.  But, and this is a big but, he throws up every night in the middle of the night. I just feel so bad for him.  He says it's "no big deal" and if that's all he has to live with this year he's fine.  I know he won't ask the doc about it.  Anyone else have this problem?  Is there any OTC stuff that could be taken? He takes his 2nd batch of RIBA with dinner so 9 hours pass at least before he's sick so I suspect it's not RIBA all by itself.  He's rarely queezy during the day.  I reminded him of when I was pregnant and kept saltines by the bedstand but he's too "tough" for that if you know what I mean.

I used to get terrible nausea in the middle of the night. I'd wake up and just want to kill myself it was so bad. My first clue as to what wasg going on was it was usually on a weekend. I traced it to a certain lack of discrimination in the girls I was taking home at closing time. Was never able to cure it completely.

You know, if you say your name real fast what it sounds like, hahahaha. Anyway, digestive problems could be a sign of internal damage so tell your dr about this. Sometimes, if you don't treat sx, they can worsen. Then the next thing you know your sicker than a dog. Then your faced with reducing or stoping tx until they are addressed. I took Phenergan, which is a perscription drug, and it keeps you from vomiting.

I didn't face the fact that I was suffering from severe anxiety (depression) which actually made me sick to my stomach. So I was close to ending tx. I took the Phenergan and was given Clonozapam and Remeron for anxiety. It was tough admitting that I suffered from depression because I've alway been pretty happy about life and had the perception that depression is caused by an emotional imbalance. Now I know it's a chemical imbalance.

This may not be your husbands problem, but the point is that you don't want your husbands sx to worsen simply because he doesn't want to tell his dr. You need to step up and do it for him. If you can, or maybe you already are, you should go with him to his appointments.

YAY - it seems ice cream IS the REAL CURE for HCV (well side effects anyway hahahaha!)

I tell you without it - I would have been hospitalized from people thinking I was anorexic...I might not have been able to eat meals of solid food but BOWLS upon BOWLS - and I never got sick of it because there are so many FLAVORS!

AHHHHHHHHH it was GREAT when my thyroid was hyper but now that it's hypo..what am I going to DO about the sugar cravings that I have developed?  Did that happen to anyone else?

I was NEVER a desert type eating person but as soon as tx started since all I could really handle eating was a few cookies or ice cream and stuff...I have developed a pure HABIT for the stuff and now just can't STOP!!!!!!!!!!!

I know what you mean! I am ready to call Jenny Craig for my sugar habit! I stopped ice cream only to become obsessed to pudding and chocolate cake! I NEVER ate desserts before, always passed them by. Now I am completely addicted.

Sweets sure are comforting on tx though. It is calming to eat a bowl of ice cream, almost like an anti anxiety pill!

I agree with sfbaygirl on the calming effect.  I don't know that I would have been hospitalized, but without I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice Cream I might have hospitalized a few folks during this tx roller coaster ride.

WOW it IS SO CALMING!!  I have actually wondered if this is how people with an over eating disorder might feel lately.  Seriously I am not being flip (for once in my life).  I just feel so much better after a "treat" and I was NEVER one for them ever before.

I even just ate a cupcake with about 3 inches of icing with candy corn on top - something that would have nauseated me prior to treatment and caused me to go.....arrrrgh who could eat that much sugar?!! and I washed it down now with a cup of coffee with sugar AND half n half.

I wonder if it's a physical thing or mental?

Forget Jenny Craigs - we'd just be heading straight to the chocolate peanut butter bars she's got on the commercials now. I can see us going well I can have 4 choc bars or ONE fettucini - and you know which would WIN!

I take aciphex now on tx, as well. At the beginning I had projectile vomiting in the middle of the night. This was hard on the carpets and me. I got new carpet and aciphex! I thought my dr. was crazy when he suggested this, b/c it was nausea, not indigestion I thought. But it worked. I still have occaisonal problems and take zanac as well sometime. The nexium, aciphex, and also OTC prilocsec work. Make sure you take several hours before or after the Riba, as most antacids are counteractive to our tx. Jim is the expert on all this, hopefully he will pop in. PPI's are good, don't take maalox, tums etc. They can cut the effect of interferon by 14%. One doc said he would rather have me feel better than worry about that, but if one can help it take the drugs that are don't reduce effectiveness of the tx drugs.

Always take Riba with fatty foods, it increases the absorbtion rate of the Riba. The archives have lots of stories.

The thing I would advise trying (which helped me) was not eating a "dinner - dinner" but instead eat several smaller type meals throughout the day and then a light dinner at night...or two.

We should take the Riba with food but maybe for a while trying a bland smaller meal might pay off until his body gets accustomed to the meds.

Fortunately - most of us DO in time.  I lost 20 pounds in the first few months and then finally levelled out. Thank God now i've gainned it all back and have barely any nauseau at all anymore.

(PS IF all else fails I advise ICE CREAM (ask anybody here that is my secret treatment weapon LOL).  It helps coat your stomach and makes it feel better and it's just GOOOOD. We all deserve a treat while doing this that is for sure.  :)

Oh yeah! Ice Cream!!! The SOC on tx for whatever ails us. I ate buckets of it. Some dr's say ice cream irrates the stomach, but it didn't for me. Smaller meals was all I could do anyway, so it was small (or big) bowls of ice cream all day. I didnt' gain weight in the beginning, but am starting to, so I had to cut that out. Wahhhh!

Zofran is a miracle nausea drug.  The doc gave it to me while preggers with twins and I have taken it on treatment successfully.  Your husband could take it right before bed.  If the pills won't stay down, I recommend phenegren suppositories.  They will help him sleep too.

A few Dove bars or a nice heaping bowl if ice cream with lots of chocolate syrup always does the trick for me.

Go to your local health food store and pick up some ginger cubes or something with a lot of ginger it. Works wonders for nausea.

My husband gets his shot on Sat eve's & wakes up on sun with a headache, then on Monday WATCH OUT! He said he feels like he has a huge hangover with the flu. He can only eat cereal on Monday then as the week progress's, he starts feeling better every day. By Fri, he feels good, then its time to do it over again. I hope your hubby does well.

I never experienced the kind of sx your hubby is having, sounds like a lousy way to ruin a good nights sleep! I did get nausea and an irritation in my throat. My doc told me not to eat anything late, eat smaller more frequent meals, and don't lie down after eating. With that. I started taking Prevacid(sp), within a few days the symptoms were gone, amazing guy my doc. You might try rubbing his tummy before he goes to bed, maybe that will help, too!!! Hope he gets better quick!   Pauly

There is a few things that caused me nausea that was not related to the riba or interferon. One was the anti-depressant the Doc put me on, for almost 2 wks it was horrible til got used to it. Second is Lactelose, Doc has me on it to give my liver a break to let it heal, had to cut back because of the waves of nausea shortly after taking it. Third is acid reflux, now that is a sx of tx and without acifex night time was hell, woke up foaming at the mouth lol, don't know if he is on anything I mentioned but the paperwork on riba says take with or without food, and I take it both ways and haven't had nausea, I would say to mention it to your Doc and try an antacid that works 24 hrs, hope it helps I know how he feels.
