Super Ventricular Tachycardia and Pregnacy

by Chris Caeson, Dec 12, 2006 12:00AM
My wife has SVT. It was discovered after her first and only pragnacy to date. We have been wondering if another child is something that we can look forward to. Her doctors have been a little vague in letting us know how much we should worry about comlications during a second pregnacy. Can this cause major problems or death to the baby or my wife. Sorry to be so blunt but This is something that my wife and I are extremely concerned about. She is currently taking Verapamil this is the only medication that has been found to work. Her SVT symptoms occur monthly. Thank you very much for this site and your help.

svt will not cause death to your wife or your baby.. It is only life threatening if you do not have a structurally abnormal heart.. She could even take beta blockers through the pregnancy to be safe.. If she pregnant right now? if not, I might suggest considering an ablation. If successful (and its usually over a 98% success rate) its a total cure, she'll never have svt or have to take medication for svt again

You do mean it's only life threatening if you do have an abnormal structured heart...

I've had SVT since I was 16.  I had two pregnancies, and though I did have an increase in frequency of the SVT, it was minor and caused no harm to me or my (very healthy) babies.  Another pregnancy is something you can both look forward to, unless your wife has some sort of structural heart disease.

im 27 and have suffered with svt since i was about 8. i have only just been to the doctors about this. my first child was still born at 5 months, as he had been very under nourished and was not getting enough oxygen. then i fell pregnant 2 years later, and this time gave birth at 5 months to a little boy who was born at just 375grams.( under one lb.) he had to be delivered early for the same reason not recieving what he needed.

i just cant see that when i suffer from these svt attacks that  my heart is pumping the adaquit amounts into the placenta. as when an attack occurs your heart is going so fast it cannot pump suffichantly. i would just like to say that my little boy is now two and is healthy and well. also please excuse the spelling mistakes.
