What It Feels Like

A headache is pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck. Tension headaches are common in the first trimester but usually subside in the second trimester. A tension headache is a condition involving pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck, usually associated with muscle tightness in these areas.

Why do you get headaches?

The reasons for your headache are unclear, but can include your pregnancy hormones, as well as fatigue, lack of sleep, nasal congestion, hunger, dehydration, allergies, stress and depression. 

How To Alleviate and Prevent Headaches

  • Talk to your doctor about taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) for your headaches.

  • Avoid these common food triggers: MSG, nitrates, sulfites, artificial sweeteners, fermented or pickled foods, chocolate, aged cheese and cultured dairy products, and certain nuts, fruits and beans.
  • Avoid these common environmental triggers:bright or flickering lights, loud noise, extreme heat or cold, strong smells (such as tobacco).
  • Take a shower.
  • Apply a warm or cool compress to your forehead or base of your skull.
  • Maintain your blood sugar level. Don't let it go too low or spike. Eat small meals often rather than 3 large meals. 
  • Drink lots of water. 
  • Get some exercise. 
  • Try relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga.
  • Get a massage.
  • Try acupuncture.
  • Sleep and rest.
