I found this interesting news article and wanted to share it our MedHelp readers. Here's an excerpt:

______________

Nearly 20 doctors have resigned from the American Academy of Family Physicians after it accepted a grant from Coca-Cola to pay for education about the dietary role of beverages and sweeteners.

Contra Costa Health Services Director Dr. William Walker publicly resigned from the national professional association on Wednesday... He said: "I am appalled and ashamed of the partnership between Coca-Cola and the American Academy of Family Physicians. How can any organization that claims to promote public health join forces with a company that promotes products that sicken our children?

In February, I shared some links with MedHelp visitors about the Gardisil vaccine. Now, six months later, I'd like to share another: http://bit.ly/Gardisil

Here's an excerpt from the link...

"Dr. Diane Harper helped design and carry out the Phase II and Phase III safety and effectiveness studies to get Gardasil approved, and has authored many of the published papers about it. She's been a paid speaker and consultant to Merck... so it’s highly unusual for a researcher to publicly criticize a medicine or vaccine she helped get approved."

"Dr. Harper joins a number of consumer watchdogs, vaccine safety advocates, and parents who question the vaccine’s risk-versus-benefit profile. She says data available for Gardasil shows that it lasts five years; there is no data showing that it remains effective beyond five years."

Here are two short video clips from a Bill Moyer interview on PBS that I found interesting.

A retired high-ranking pharmaceutical executive (Wendell Potter) shares interesting information about health care in America, and why the movie SicKo was strategically black-balled by the health insurance industry.

I'd like to share two links from noteworthy news articles about the "swine flu" that's capturing so much national attention. I hope you will find this information beneficial.

1) http://tinyurl.com/dey825 (Time Magazine)

"In February 1976, an outbreak of swine flu struck Fort Dix Army base in New Jersey, killing a 19-year-old private and infecting hundreds of soldiers. Concerned that the U.S. was on the verge of a devastating epidemic, President Gerald Ford ordered a nationwide vaccination program at a cost of $135 million (some $500 million in today's money). Within weeks, reports surfaced of people developing Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing nerve disease that can be caused by the vaccine. By April, more than 30 people had died of the condition. Facing protests, federal officials abruptly canceled the program on Dec. 16. The epidemic failed to materialize."

2) http://tinyurl.com/cc5ot9 (L.A. Times)

"Inspecting the virus itself is of little help, because scientists have yet to identify which features help it spread or kill, said Dr. Scott Layne, an epidemiologist at the UCLA School of Public Health. 'The microscope doesn't tell you anything," Layne said, "what are the genetic correlates of virulence? Unknown. Transmissibility? Unknown.' ... 'I know less about influenza today than I did 10 years ago,' said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota."
