GOOD & EVIL.....

May 04, 2008 05:20PM - 7 comments

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said,
"My son, the battle is between two "wolves" inside us all...
One is evil...
It is anger, envy, jealousy,
sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance,
self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority,
lies, false pride, superiority, and ego."

"The other is good...
It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity,
humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy,
generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a moment
and then asked his grandfather...
"Which one wins?"
The old Cherokee replied,
"The one you feed!"

I love it........that is a brilliant story!
We do need to remember the correct one to 'feed', even in times of anger and envy! I will certainly be feeding the right one from now on!
Momeluv: Your great!

An interesting story on many levels.

Personally, I've never seen a wolf who is:  evil, angry, envious, jealous, arrogant, self-pitying, guilty, resentful, feels inferior, lies, has false pride, feels superior (doesn't that contradict feeling inferior?) and/or egocentric.

Never seen one with joy, peace, hope, serenity, humility, kindness (well, maybe),  benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.

But then I've never seen a bluebird commit rape, a killer whale wage war, a jellyfish cause pollution, a ladybug destroy the environment for profit  ....

These are human attributes which I understand are part of our Native storytelling heritage.  I'm not Cherokee but in my tribe, the wolf would have been coyote.

Is it not funny how we all look at things differently?. I looked at it as seeing things in the "positive light". happiness instead of sorrow . One of my favorite sayings is live laugh and love as quoted from my Mom many times, if you don't take care of living clean, how are you going to laugh and love?

Diversity and different points of view are can enrich us.  I looked at that picture and just loved it.  While I understand the story, I cannot imagine any animal, bird, fish or insect being evil.  That is reserved for humans.   But then humans are able to see things in different ways whereas animals often cannot.
