PAIN PILLS

The National Pain Foundation has announced that they are seeking participants in a new study about chronic pain.  Here is the official notice:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seeking Study Participants

Do you have chronic pain that has lasted for six months or longer? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a research study to examine the effectiveness of the Pain Self-Management Program, a new internet-based pain self-help program for people with chronic pain.

The project is funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The researchers are requesting help from 308 persons with chronic pain to test the program. The online program will be offered to you at no cost. The program will take six weeks to complete. You will be asked to fill out a set of online questionnaires on three occasions: prior to the program, immediately after completion, and three months after completion. The questionnaires contain questions concerning your current pain history and experience, your pain attitudes and coping strategies, your use of health care services, your physical activity level, and your emotional well-being. In addition, you will be asked to answer questions about the content of the program to determine how well you have learned the material. Brief (5 minute) daily assessments will also be required. You will receive $75 as compensation for your time in completing all assessments.

To qualify, please review the consent form at http://painmanagement.speedsurvey.com. You must have access to a computer with internet access, be between the ages of 18-80, and be able to speak, read, and write English. If you have questions or concerns about the study, you can contact Dr. Linda Ruehlman at ***@****.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do not know anything about the study other than what can be read on their web sites, at www.nationalpainfoundation.org.

I've posted a link to your blog on our MSK (Medullary Sponge Kidney) community.  Thanks!   Many on our community are in constant pain from kidney stones and/or complications/reference to this disorder that one is born with and I'm sure they'll stop by and read your blog Dr. Junig!

Hi Doc,  I asked the "secondary withdrawal" question a while back.  I have another for you....IS there a difference between addiction and being "physically dependent"?   The reason I ask is my lack of desire for the oxy.  Since quitting cold turkey on May 21st, the ONLY time I have had a thought of it is when my pain becomes exacerbated.   I have the thought "I need to take a pill", followed immediately with "Oh yeah, I don't HAVE pills anymore!".  Aside from a couple of those, NOTHING.

Am I correct in assuming that this is a study for managing chronic pain without the aid of narcotics?
