positive drug test

It seems that many members are often having "bad" drug screens so again, here is some information on why your Test may be wrong.

Medications & Substances Causing False Positives

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times New Service, a study of 161 prescription and over the counter medications showed that 65 of them produced false positive results in the most widely administered urine test. Ronald Siegel, a psychopharmacologist at UCLA said 'The widespread testing and reliance on tell-tale traces of drugs in the urine is simply a panic reaction invoked because the normal techniques for controlling drug use haven't worked very well. The next epidemic will be testing abuse."

Byrd Labs has in its possession an internal document from the Syva Company, makers of the widely used EMIT test. This document, leaked by a disillusioned company employee, lists more than 250 over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs that can cause false positives.

Substances that cause False Positive Drug Test Results

THC - Substances or Conditions which can cause false positives
Dronabinol (Marinol)
Ibuprofen; (Advil, Nuprin, Motrin, Excedrin IB etc)
Ketoprofen (Orudis KT)
Kidney infection (Kidney disease, diabetes) Liver Disease
Naproxen (Aleve)
Promethazine (Phenergan, Promethegan)
Riboflavin (B2, Hempseed Oil)

Amphetamines - Substances or Conditions which can cause false positives
Ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, propylephedrine, phenylephrine, or desoxyephedrine
(Nyquil, Contact, Sudafed, Allerest, Tavist-D, Dimetapp, etc)
Phenegan-D, Robitussin Cold and Flu, Vicks Nyquil
Over-the-counter diet aids with phenylpropanolamine (Dexatrim, Accutrim)
Over-the-counter nasal sprays (Vicks inhaler, Afrin)
Asthma medications (Marax, Bronkaid tablets, Primatine Tablets)

Opiates - Substances or Conditions which can cause false positives
Poppy Seeds
Tylenol with codeine
Most prescription pain medications
Cough suppressants with Dextromethorphan (DXM)
Nyquil
Kidney infection, Kidney Disease
Diabetes, Liver Disease

Ecstacy - Substances or Conditions which can cause false positives
Ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, propylephedrine, phenylephrine, or desoxyephedrine
(Nyquil, Contact, Sudafed, Allerest, Tavist-D, Dimetapp, etc)
Phenegan-D, Robitussin Cold and Flu, Vicks Nyquil
Over-the-counter diet aids with phenylpropanolamine (Dexatrim, Accutrim)
Over-the-counter nasal sprays (Vicks inhaler, Afrin)
Asthma medications (Marax, Bronkaid tablets, Primatine Tablets)
Prescription medications (Amfepramone, Cathne, Etafediabe, Morazone, phendimetrazine, phenmetrazine, benzphetamine, fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine, dexdenfluramine,Redux, mephentermine, Mesocarb, methoxyphenamine, phentermine, amineptine, Pholedrine, hydroymethamphetamine, Dexedrine, amifepramone, clobenzorex, fenproyorex, mefenorex, fenelylline, Didrex, dextroamphetamine, methphenidate, Ritalin, pemoline, Cylert, selegiline, Deprenyl, Eldepryl, Famprofazone) Kidney infection, kidney disease
Liver disease, diabetes

Cocaine - Substances or Conditions which can cause false positives
Kidney infection (kidney disease)
Liver infection (liver disease)
Diabetes
Amoxicillin, tonic water

In the news...
Hair Tests catch more blacks than whites
Drug Tests Bring Worries Of Accuracy
ACLU complaints more than splitting hairs
Antibiotics Cause False Positives on Heroin Tests

Among the items reported as causing false positive test results are:
Pain relievers such as Advil, Nuprin, Motrin and menstrual cramp medications like Midol and Trendar. All drugs containing the widely used pain reliever Ibuprofen are known to cause positive samples for Marijuana. Non-steroidal anti inflammatories such as Naproxyn have cross reacted in blind tests. These are often prescribed for runners, sports injuries to joints, and those suffering from arthritis.

Syva labs has recently reworked its Cannabinoid test and claims to have eliminated this problem. But a Science magazine article (July 8, 1988) lists Ibuprofen as cross reactive. Under the new government guidelines THC testing levels will be reduced to 50 nanograms. Many more THC false positives can be expected in 1994.

Dristan Nasal Spray, Neosynephren, Vicks Nasal Spray, Sudafed, etc. and others containing ephedrine or pnenypropanolamine. Over the counter appetite suppressants which contain propanolamine. Most common nasal decongestants can cause a positive reading for Amphetamines. As the cross reactive list suggests at the back of this booklet, amphetamine false positives are the most common. Recent articles in the Journal of Clinical Chemistry ,Vol. 38 No.12 1992 and Vol. 39 No.3 1993 warn that medications containing chloropromazine, fluspirilene, and others may yield a positive when tested for amphetamines.

Vicks Formula 44M containing Dextromethorphan, and Primatene-M containing perylamine as well as the pain reliever Demerol, and prescription anti-depressant Elavil test positive for opiates up to three days. Even Quinine water can also cause a positive reading for opiates.

Poppy Seeds such as the ones on a bagel from your favorite deli, etc. The journal of Clinical Chemistry Vol.33 No.6, 1987 reports: "the quantities of poppy seed ingested in this study (25 and 40 g) may be expected to be contained in one or two servings of poppy seed cake. Therefore, poppy seeds represent a potentially serious source of falsely positive results in testing opiate abuse." Clinical Chemistry goes on to conclude: Not only is it difficult to distinguish heroin or morphine abuse from codeine, but dietary poppy seeds can give a strong positive result for urinary opiate of several days duration that is confirmed by GC/MS analysis".

Nyquil Nighttime Cold Medicine will test positive for Methadone up to two days.

Antibiotics. Certain newly developed antibiotics have cause positive samples urine tests. Ampicillin is suspect. Amoxicillin has caused positives for cocaine.

Diazepam tests positive for PCP as well as the ingredient in some cough medicines, Dextromethorophan.

Your own enzymes. A small fraction of the population excrete large amounts of certain enzymes in their urine which can produce a positive drug test. Dr. John Morgan of the Dept. of Pharmacology of New York City University writes: "A false positive test could occur in some individuals because they excrete unusually large amounts of endogenons lysozyme or malate dehydrogenase." Dr. Morgan judges that natural enzyme interference may run as high as 10% of positive samples.

Black Skin. This is not a joke! Those of African origin, certain Orientals, or pacific Islanders might test positive for marijuana. Dr. James Woodford, a toxicologist associated with Emory University labs hypothesized the pigment melanin which protects the skin from the sun, approximates the molecular structure of the THC metabolite to cross react on the marijuana urine test. Dark skinned Caucasians such as those from the subcontinent of India could also read positive on marijuana tests. The body eliminates some melanin in a dark person's urine sample.

Passive marijuana inhalation. If you attend a rock concert or ride in a car where marijuana is smoked nearby, even if you do not partake, the second hand marijuana that you might inhale may give your test a positive result for several days.

Hi,
My son just went to his appt. to get his pain meds.,and his MD. said he was showing codeine in his urine test.He just sat there and cried in front of her with a hopeless feeling.I can actually say I know for a fact he has not done anything except his own meds..And how my husband and I are so sure he has not been out of our sight except when sleeping.Another thing I can not figure out why would she thinks he would even want to take something that is so much weaker than his pain meds.(morphine&oxycodone) that just seems senseless, and another thing years ago he took codeine cough syrup given to him by a nurse when he was really sick and he did not sleep at all that whole night due to hives and bad breathing problems he was really restless from that one dose of it.
Do you think if I copy this and take it to her she will look at it and believe it?He has been taking a little tylenol, mucinex, bennadryl and probably a few other cold meds. due to a bad cold and sinus infection!!!!He has nothing for now and is in alot of pain!!
Please e- mail me!!!!  ***@****
                                                               Thanks So Much!!!!
                                                                                 Diane

could you please post or provide the direct link to the Los Angeles Times article that you mention here? This would be a wonderful source of information. A close family member has had her children taken by CPS. She has cystic renal disease and a false positive was used to take her children by the agency. I am trying to locate valid information about false positives. An interesting note, is the the GAL (Gaurdian ad Litem) for the children had NEVER heard of this before!  Thanks, AuntieinFl

i am currently on lamictal 200 mg and wellbutrin 300 mg, and klonopin 1 mg every day.  i also take synthroid, an 81 mg aspirin, carvedilol, enalapril and simvastatin every day.  i was recently taken off of pristiq 50 mg and put on the lamictal (lamotrigine).  I recently went to apply for a job and took a urine drug test and it came up with a false positive for PCP.  I do not do any kind of drugs whatsoever.  I am a 46 y/o female.  I am also a nurse.  Somebody please help and explain why this could come up this way.  I also bought an otc drug test from CVS and it also showed false positive for PCP.  I do not know what to do.

Hi Ginger:

Could have someone slipped you something? Do you go out for drinks? This is the only thing I can think of besides the possibility of you being poisoned. PCP is a poison and is also used by vets. I haven't the slightest clue on why this has happened. I would defilitly have it checked out. Hav esome extensive blood work done to find out why.

Sorry this has happened,
Molly

I recently was drug tested without my knowledge, Doctor came in saying I tested positive for Cocaine, Marijuana, Barbituates, Opiates, etc..he named off a Laundry List of things.  Needless to say I suffer with anxiety and went into full Panic attack mode, became beligerent, crying, loud, ugh it was aweful.  He promised it was a new test to his practice and would send it off to a Lab for results.  I have faxed him twice and have not hear a word from him or his office since this test, which was last Friday.  I have Fatty Liver or NASH so after researching it, until my Fatty Liver goes away, I will always test a "false positive" for tons of drugs.  I don't do drugs.  I take Prilosec for acid reflux, Klonopin for Anxiety, and Xyzal and Cingular for allergies.  That's it.  Now I have contacted my Liver Doc for confirmation and once that is done, I will ask him to write to the doctor explaining the situation.  I hope this helps.  There is another website that offers a lot of info on what causes False Positive reults and BTW-in 1997 a woman who had a poppy seed bagel the day before testing, tested positive for opiates and was fired.  She sued and won almost $900,000.00///you can easily find the case on the web.  When in doubt consult an attorney and let him hire an expert in drug testing if you loose your job, don't get a job, or are denied medication you need by doctors who aren't knowledgeable in this particular field.Look up False Positives on line and you'll see the Laundry List of what can cause this to happen.

I am so sorry to hear this. Many of these so called "new" tests are non-sense. What you should have done was insisted on a blood test right there in his office. If not his office, then you should have gone right over to the Hospital and told them that you wanted blood drawn for a drug test. This would put away any suspicion of you using drugs. Contact his office immediately and do this... it's not too late. If you are sincere and do not take these drugs (and you tested positive for everything in the book) then get some type of blood testing somewhere to prove it to them. Then go hire a lawyer adn sue that lab who made the mistake.

My best,
Molly

I had my neck fused 9 years ago and have since developed a degenerative bone disease in my neck. I see a pain management doctor and am currently taking neurontin 300 mg every 8 hours, robaxin 750 mg every 8 hours, norco 5's every 4 hours and also take naproxen 500mg twice a day. i had to take a pre-employment drug screen and the results came back positive for opiads and thc. Needless to say i was let go even though i provided them with a list of medications. i was told that they contacted a doctor and pharmacist and was told that none of these would show up positive for thc but I have read that naproxen can cause a false positive. Any help would be appreciated. By the way I do not smoke marijuana. I also have a long history of uti's, kidney infection and stones as well as cysts on my bladder and urethra.

Thanks,
Lynne

This is really upsetting to me to find out how many people get fired from false positive test. I just see pain management for Lupus and a bad back I get a pain patch, oxycodone, and endocet. On Tuesday I went in for my refill I had to give them a urine sample and tested positive for cocaine and the PA said that It showed that I was negative for any of those pain killers, I started to cry and told her that the only illegal drug I have ever done was marijuana. I have to go back on the 21 on this month to see what the lab test say and the out come of weather I get to go back or not on top of all that she send me home with half of what I was take for the pain patch and no pills. But what really hurt the most is that she told me I tested positive for cocaine in front of my 16yr old daughter!    Btw I have been suffering from UTI's and I do take nyquil and allergy medication, I also have had lots of work done on my teeth so lots of novacaine since I metabolize it really quick and been putting lidocaine on a cut also on new years eve my husband and I went out to a friends house I had a couple of drinks and one of her friends was smoking a clove cigar! Does anyone know if any of these would cuz a false positive? Someone help plz?!!

Sorry forgot to put that I took a hit of that cig and about 30min later I was filling dizzy so we went home idk what the clove cig had since it was my first time trying it I just thought it was the 2 drinks I had. So of there's anyone out there that can think why I would test positive that would help ease my mind!

What you should have done and this goes for everyone is request a blood test immediately. Have them do it right there in the Clinic in front of you. If it still reads positive for Cocaine then you must do more investigating on what else you may have ingested one to two days prior to the screen.  NOVACAINE WILL TEST POSITIVE for Cocaine.

Go back to your Dentist office and have them write you a statement in regards to the Novacaine treatment you had. Maek sure that the Doctor gets this info immediately. This should clear you of all illicit drugs in your system.

My best,
Molly

Hi My name is Megan,   my Husband has been doing urine tests about a month now. He was just informed today that some of tests were positive for marijuana. This is ridiculous he does NOT smoke! He was told the test were sent to  a lab and they were 100% marijuana positive. Now he is going to lose everything what can we do? This system seems to be fraud how can we get help to sue for False bad drug tests. Also the Ava Court house and drug program Seems to me to be messing up the test results by not doing them correctly. My husband has had three different people give him test one person he has been clean the other two people that have given him the urine tests he has failed AND AGAIN he does not do drugs how is this possible? IT seems this program is FRAUD what can we do?
