Woke up at 4 am and noticed an area on my abdomen, below the lowest of the four previous abscesses, that is the size of a pencil eraser. Not too big yet, but definitely abscess .. and hurts. Since I have been on antibiotics since the first week in May, this really should not be happening. Decided to go to the ER, where they know what this is, and beat the 8 am rush.
The doctor who was the one who made the correct diagnosis, nocardiosis, is the one I was fortunate enough to see. He sent me to the University of Iowa earlier this month and called them this morning to coordinate the care with the Infectious Disease docs there. Nocardiosis of the skin is usually a secondary site .. with the lungs and then brain being primary. So far, with tests completed, they believe I have a very rare primary skin nocardiosis ... that relates to my tummy surgery and the resulting seromas .. that through aspiration or spontaneous rupture allowed a path for the nocardia bacteria to enter. It is very slow growing and very hard to eradicate and grows in all temperatures .. thus the long antibiotic therapy.
So .. long and short of it .. hot packs 4 x a day from now till Friday .. back to the hospital on Friday for a look see ... pain meds .. and we'll see if it turns into something that can be aspirated and recultured or whether it resolves. Antibiotics continue and will now go a minimum of 9 months to a year with this "recurrence".
Will be on a little tomorrow and a little on Friday .. and hope to be back full-time on Saturday.
Regarding my little granddaughter, who has leukemia .. she is entering Phase IV of her treatment next week and I'll update you on that soon. Please keep her in your prayers.
Love and Hugggssss ... and I really am trying to get better ..
