Still confused???

I went back to my gyn today and basically, what he said was, that I am still producing estrogen (from my symptoms) so he thinks my cysts will resolve and my adenomyosis will go away.  He can't explain the bloating, the fullness, the urinary urgency, the constipation or the shortness of breath - sheesh!  He wanted to put me on daily progesterone to counterbalance the estrogen. I did tell him no to that, because I was so depressed when I was on it before and it did nothing.  So basically, all he offered to do was write a prescription for the bloating - try that for 3 weeks and let him know.  And then he says I should still go on the progesterone.  He has mentioned several times that he doesn't want to do any surgery because I am not having bleeding issues. I am not sure why that matters - I do know that he always does surgery when there is bleeding issues.  He says I should be bleeding if I have adenomyosis, which the ultrasound indicated that I had and that is why the doctor who read the u/s recommended an MRI.  For those of you who don't know, I have had an abdominal u/s to rule out gall bladder, kidney, liver, etc. (came back normal), complete cardiac workup (normal), complete G/I workup (two colonoscopies/one endoscopy - small hiatel hernia/hemmerrhoids), going to see a pulmonary specialist in June, chest xray (normal).  SO.....I feel that I have done my part in trying to find out what the problem is.

I did think after I left the office that I should ask him about testing for estrogen - to see if I am actually producing any? I do believe that they do that, right? To see if a woman is in menopause or not.  Maybe someone will read this that would know.  I hate to post on either forum because I really do not know what I have!!!   I tried to call back to ask them that, but they close at noon on Fridays.

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated and if you are taking the time to read this - thank you!
Colleen

Don't be afraid to post on this forum..!!. That was the problem with a lot of us .. We didn't know what we had , but someone will no doubt see this and be able to shed more light on it..

Are you going to be having the MRI? When do you see him again? after the 3 weeks of progesterone? Sorry that I can't be of much help with the adenomyosis. But I'm sure someone will be checking in on that !

Take care and keep us posted,
Sandy

Oh Colleen!  That is so frustrating!  Are you able to switch to another gyn?  You'd think his office would be sensitive to the pain and bloating of cysts.  I've been very frustrated at the delays in getting to my new gyn but was oh so happy at how I was treated there.  You deserve better!

so sorry Colleen, only thing I think of would be an endocronologist, and push for an MRI. They tell us to listen to our bodies, then tell us to ignore it? how confusing it all is.
take care and keep me updated

You can have a simple blood test to see if you are producing estrogen.  But, you have monthly menstration right? so you should be producing estrogen.  I had mine checked before but I do not have a uterus so no menstrating so no way to tell but by blood test.

Your visit sounds weird.  I would get a second opinon from a second GYN...I did when I had my hysterectomy for adenomyosis.  I was having heavy bleeding and pain in my hips for 2 weeks out of each month.  But if I had know about the shots to stop the period I might not of had the hysterctomy...have you tried Depo?

I hope you get answers soon.

Thank you everyone for your advice. It is a thought to getting another opinion, something I will keep in mind.  He does not want to do an MRI either because he thinks I don't need it.  Thank you butterflytc for telling me what you went through and telling me that an MRI would definitely give me more information without having surgery.  and WolfeHall, I did think of going for testing to see if I am producing estrogen; but that thought came once I was back at work. I am going to call them Monday.  I am not menstruating at all and haven't been for at least 5 months and before that it was about 5 months.  Even with the progesterone, I did not bleed.  I may post on the forum about the adenomyosis, which from what I have read causes heavy bleeding.  Since I am not bleeding,  I am concerned that it isn't adenomyosis and what is it then?

Thanks for all your help and I will let you know something when I know more!

Colleen,
I am sorry to hear about your frustrating visit. If it's possible, I would get all your records and go see a new gyn for a fresh unbiased second opinion.  I wish I had some valuable information to offer you, all I have to offer is  friendship and support if that helps at all...
talk to you soon,

BIG HUGS for you,
Joelle

Hi Colleen!  I'm thinking second opinion and time for a new doctor.  With the feelings of pain you are having, keep pressing until you find a doctor who will WORK WITH YOU instead of dismissing you with a silly script.  I've gotten to know you a bit, and I don't think you're the type to complain unless something is wrong.

Go see another doctor.  To be honest, if my doctor did that to me, I don't even think I would give them another call.
And I might not be inclined to pay their bill too quickly, either!

I really don't like being treated as though I am an idiot.  And doctors tend to do that to us, sometimes.

I'm so sorry for you, and hope you get what you deserve, which is a good doctor, good treatment, and a health filled future.

love,
donna

Hi Colleen,
it really seems like you are being given the runaround !! , its unacceptable to be fobbed off like you have been and when you are in pain its awful getting through each day !!. I really think a new doctor is the way to go , you have a lot of symptoms and you need to find a doctor who will listen to your concerns. I hope you get the answer really soon .

Take care and best wishes Angie

Hey Colleen,
Just read this bit after posting asking how your appointment went..sorry.
I agree with Donna, I think you should go to another Doctor.  I also found this great information at work about menopause.  Is there a possibility that some of yours (and mine) symptoms might be menopause related.  Even if the tests say that its not menopause.  There can be just so many problems and symptoms with it,  and I don't believe that a hormone test always tells you absolutely and positively that you are having menopausal symptoms or not!!
I've cut and pasted all these symptoms..my gosh I think Ive had menopause since i was 18..lol!!
The 35 Symptoms

Hot flashes, flushes, night sweats and/or cold flashes, clammy feeling
Bouts of rapid heart beat
Irritability
Mood swings, sudden tears
Trouble sleeping through the night (with or without night sweats)
Irregular periods; shorter, lighter periods; heavier periods, flooding; phantom periods, shorter cycles, longer cycles
Loss of libido
Dry vagina
Crashing fatigue
Anxiety, feeling ill at ease
Feelings of dread, apprehension, doom
Difficulty concentrating, disorientation, mental confusion
Disturbing memory lapses
Incontinence, especially upon sneezing, laughing; urge incontinence
Itchy, crawly skin
Aching, sore joints, muscles and tendons
Increased tension in muscles
Breast tenderness
Headache change: increase or decrease
Gastrointestinal distress, indigestion, flatulence, gas pain, nausea
Sudden bouts of bloat
Depression
Exacerbation of existing conditions
Increase in allergies
Weight gain
Hair loss or thinning, head, pubic, or whole body; increase in facial hair
Dizziness, light-headedness, episodes of loss of balance
Changes in body odor
Electric shock sensation under the skin and in the head
Tingling in the extremities
Gum problems, increased bleeding
Burning tongue, burning roof of mouth, bad taste in mouth, change in breath odor
Osteoporosis (after several years)
Changes in fingernails: softer, crack or break easier
Tinnitus: ringing in ears, bells, \'whooshing,\' buzzing etc.

Well maybe not all of the symptoms but some anyway!!
Seriously, a 2nd opinion would not be a silly idea.
Love to you...Kim

Joelle, Donna, Angie and Kim,
Yes, probably another doctor would be a good idea.  I am calling them today to ask for testing to see if I am producting estrogen or not, since he is basing everything on that and I am calling my pcp to see if he will refer me for an MRI. I spent Saturday night and all day and night Sunday in bed with severe stomach cramping. This is the 4th time it has happened and no one else around me has ever gotten it, so am concerned it is isn't a virus.  My fiance came over and he said the same thing - get that MRI scheduled.   So that is my goal today.  Kim, that list is scary lol.  Could menopause really cause all those symptoms?  Because of course I have several, who wouldn't????  Thanks for sharing that with me!! I appreciate all the words and help. Thank you all,
Colleen

Colleen,
Bad news that you were sick, good news that you are going for it! Good luck, kick that old doc to the curb,  don't give up until you get your way. You and your health are worth the fight.
Hope you feel better today,
Joelle
